6 Stages You Go Through While Writing Job Applications

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Helsinki chapter.

Job hunting can be a tricky business, and writing an application is a form of art in itself. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve written one or three hundred, crafting cover letters and updating your resume is an emotional rollercoaster every single time. Do these thought processes sound familiar?

1. Procrastination – When you know your future employer is not going to knock on your door and beg you to work for them, but you want to stay in that dream bubble a little while longer.

”Maybe just one more episode before I start writing applications”

”Nah, I’ll just find someone rich to marry. Or win the lottery. Or both!”

2. Reality Hits You in the Face – Okay, so you’re gonna have to pay rent at some point. And having something else in your CV besides that one babysitter gig two years ago might not be such a bad thing afterall.

”It’s responsibility o’clock”

3. Self-examination – Who are you? What are your strenghts and weaknesses? Good luck summarizing your skills, experience and personality in two sentences in the midst of an existential crisis.

4. Overconfidence – The point of a job application is to make you look good, right?

”Yeah sure I am an expert in computing, duh I’m using the internet right now”

“Excellent language skills? Experience in customer service? Positive and hard-working?”

5. Complete Lack of Confidence – It starts to seem like you are not qualified to even scoop ice cream without a degree in nuclear physics and ten years of training.

“Everything I have written here is a lie”

“How on earth have I survived on this planet for so long?”

6. Overconfidence (again) – The feeling when you finally press ”send” and already start going through the job interview in your head.

If you’re on a job hunt at the moment, good luck and let us know about your experience!
