There’s timing for everything, for example summer job hunting. It is commonly said that the best chance of getting a summer job is to start seeking it already in January. But there’s no need to panic, if you just got the idea that you want to have a job for this summer, it’s not too late! Here are three tips on how to get a summer job right now.

1. Look through your old contacts

There’s a high chance that you have already gained some work experience. Try to dig your memory and look for the old bosses and company names where you have made some money. Then just make the move and contact them if they would have a job offer for you. When you have the contacts why not use them? Very easy!

2. Show up in person

When you find a potential work place, go there and ask directly if they would have an open position for you. Don’t write an email and don’t text because it takes more time for them to answer you, if they even do it. So save time and show that you are active and keen to work for them by going to the company itself.

3. Ask around

Again, be active and ask from parents, neighbours, relatives, friends etc. if they would have an opportunity for you to make money. A lot of times people have work they could offer like cutting grass, painting walls, taking care of kids, garden work… If you feel spontaneous, post on your Facebook page or other social media that you are looking for a summer job.

Remember that every job is valuable. Don’t be too picky on what you want to do and be open to try new things. There are jobs everywhere, from cleaning to selling ice cream. Update your CV and tell all about your skills, hobbies, talents, education and motivation to learn. This is your change to grow your contact list and make new friends.   Even if you try all these tips and you get nothing, there’s still a great option, volunteering! Just pick a cause that you want to work on or help those in need. Do your research on different volunteering organizations and contact the one that interests you the most.    Be brave and make the effort to contact people. When you really want to have a job and work for it you definitely will get one.   Here are some summer job or volunteering links (in Finnish) for you to check out:
