3 Tips for Choosing the Best Courses for the Spring Term

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Helsinki chapter.

It may be the last thing you want to think about right now, but it is nevertheless time for spring course registration! To make the most of your Christmas holiday, plan your studies now and you can have a relaxing break without having to worry about what courses you’re going to take. To make things easier, we compiled a list of tips to help you find the best courses.

1. Check your subject organisation’s mailing list.

The courses advertised on your organisation’s mailing list are targeted at you, even if they are on a subject you wouldn’t think has anything to do with your studies. These adverts are a great way to discover courses on new, interesting topics, and to broaden your horizons.

2. Think creatively.

We’ve all been there: the courses you need are all taking place at the same time on the same day, meaning you’ll either need to make like Hermione and learn to time travel, or resign to wait until next year for some of them. While lecture courses are great, it’s also worth checking whether the courses you want to take are available as an online course, a book exam, or a lecture pass. Those allow for more flexibility.

3. Ask your friends.

There’s a good chance that your friends have taken some obscure but interesting courses that you might not otherwise come across (WebOodi being what it is), so especially if you’re looking for some filler courses to your schedule, it’s a good idea to ask your friends for recommendations. After all, you and your friends probably have similar interests even if you’re majoring in different subjects!
