It’s no secret that break ups suck. You may feel sad, angry, helpless, abandoned, and a plethora of other crappy feelings. However, living in the modern era, we are blessed with television, incredible actors, and amazing stories to be able to inspire us and get us out of the break-up rut. Personally, when I go through a break-up, the last thing I want to watch is a classic rom-com in which two people fall for each other and live happily ever after. Rather, I enjoy watching movies in which the couples don’t always work out because it reminds me that it is possible to get through the break up, move on, and be okay on my own.

Someone Great

This is a great movie about a girl who experiences an unexpected break up. With her new found freedom, she thinks about moving across the country, gets closer to her girlfriends, and learns how to be independent after being in a relationship.

Malcom and Marie

This is easily one of the best movies I have ever seen. From the way it is shot, how the story is portrayed, and the beautifully portrayed acting, it is all around an amazing film. This film is about a couple that achieves incredible success at a movie review. After the review party, the couple reflects the struggles they have gone through and all the obstacles they had to go through to get to the successful place they are in.

Eat, Pray, Love

This famous movie is about a woman who decides to go on a trip of self-discovery after going through a divorce. Like many feel after going through a break-up, Elizabeth Gilbert feels lost, alone, and confused with where she is at in her life. This is a movie that makes those who are going through a hard time NEED to watch.

Legally Blonde

We’ve all seen and love the story of Elle Woods and how she goes from simp to success when she enrolls in Harvard Law School all to impress her ex. However, her path to love leads her to find a love for herself, for education, and for new friends rather than a love for her self-righteous ex.

Happy Anniversary

This movie is about a couple who, on their anniversary, reflect on the events throughout their relationship that have gotten them to where they are and decide whether or not to continue the relationship.

Wine Country

If you are in need of a girls weekend to forget about men, then this is the movie is for you. When a group of best friends from college decide to take a girls trip to a wine vineyard. It’s all about women supporting women for being independent and succeeding by themselves.

Silver Linings Playbook

This amazing story told by Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper about two chaotic people with two chaotic lives. The two characters have problems of their own and in the midst of all the chaos, they end up finding a real and deep connection. Although it is hard to watch a movie about a couple when going through a break-up, this one shows that not all love stories are easy and simple, but messy and complex.

500 Days of Summer

This movie shows that not all love stories have a happy ending. I love this movie because it goes in-depth in about how confusing love truly is. This story follows the history of a couple and how they ended up breaking up. It shows raw emotion and authenticity unlike any movie I have ever watched before.

Call Me By Your Name

Everyone assumes that star-crossed lovers will always end up together. This story, however, tells a different story. Although the relationship is a bit of a scandal between a professor’s son and a summer intern, the love between these two is more real than anyone around them. But, as with any summer love story, the summer ends, the intern must return home, and the two men are forced to go their separate ways. Not only does this story tell about love, but it also shows the vulnerability of sexual orientation, finding love despite age, and that no external factors when two souls find love.

Thelma and Louis

Who doesn’t love a couple of best friends trying to outrun the law? This is the all time best movie about female friendship. When a couple of best friends decide to go on a little vacation, the trip takes a turn when someone accidentally gets killed. The two best friends, Thelma and Louis, flee the situation and try to outrun the consequences, they end up having to make a life or death choice.
