TED Talks That Could Change Your Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hartford chapter.

People all over campus are watching TED talks – maybe your professors have used them in class, maybe your friends keep telling you to “watch this one video”, or maybe you’re a fan of TED yourself.

For those who don’t know TED, it’s a series of global conferences aimed at spreading ideas all over the world and making people think.

Here are three powerful TED talks that you might have missed.

Confessions Of A Depressed Comic, Kevin Breel:

Kevin Breel is a young comedian from Canada who struggles with mental illness. His TED talk discusses the impact mental illness has on people in our society as well as the stigma attached to it.

Powerful quote: “We live in a society where if you break your arm, they run over to sign your cast but if you say you’re depressed, they run in the other direction…we’re accepting of every other part of our bodies breaking…except our brains.”

30 Is Not The New 20, Meg Jay:

Psychologist Meg Jay explains that your twenties are not a “throwaway decade” and while marriage and many major life events don’t happen until later in life, your twenties should be used to help you progress toward a positive future.

Powerful quote: “Forget about having an identity crisis and get some identity capital. … Do something that adds value to who you are. Do something that’s an investment in who you might want to be next.”

Leading with Lollipops, Drew Dudley:

Dudley’s talk focuses on the importance of positivity, and how by doing even small things like holding the door open for someone or saying good morning to the custodian cleaning the front hall of your dorm, you can make someone’s day.

Powerful quote: “We spend so much time focusing on the big, powerful things we do, that we’re convinced those are the only things we can do.”
