Being a student athlete is no joke. Try adding the challenges of being female to the mix. It takes dedication, time, energy, and confidence. As a woman, exuding a healthy confidence should always be on your agenda. That may look different for female student athletes. With them, it’s all about balancing convenience and decency. As long as it is quick, easy, and looks okay, it will do. On behalf of the basketball player that slips into class a few minutes late, or the soccer player that shows up with a little grass in her hair, here are some things that student athlete would tell you daily, if given the chance.
I’m only wearing sweats because I have conditioning later.
This is when that hefty collection of leggings and yoga pants come in handy. Why waste a good outfit when you know you’ll have to change out of it within a couple of hours? That outfit could be saved for a fun Saturday without a game or a match. Besides, when you have practice every day, there is no need to be in anything other than comfortable workout clothes.
Excuse me if I smell like the gym or grass.
She either just came from outside practicing, or straight from the gym. The chances are that she’s probably aware that she smells like… well, we’ll just call it “hard work”.
I can do more with my hair than a bun.
With constant working out and sweating, there is no point in pressing or really even doing your hair for that matter. Natural and protective hairstyles are the most convenient. Even more convenient is the efficiency of a bun. That’s not all we know how to do with our hair, but it is the quickest and easy hairstyle.
Yes. I do wear makeup.
She knows how to put on her own makeup… pretty well actually. Even if she did have the time or energy to put on makeup in the morning, there is no use when she’ll probably sweat it off later.
Now you have a little insight as to how female student athletes think. Being an athlete and being comfortable with yourself take a special kind of confidence that these ladies show. Juggling womanhood, school, and sports is no easy task, but they sure do handle it with grace!
