In 2021, HBO Max dropped “The Sex Lives of College Girls.” It features four women that are trying to navigate their college life at a fictional prestigious college in Vermont. As I go over this show, there are major spoiler alerts. This is why the show “The Sex Lives of College Girls” work:

Diversity- the characters come from different backgrounds, including race, sexual orientation, and economics. Whitney is an African American soccer player whose mom is a Washington state senator. Kimberly is a white American that is considered lower class. Leighton is a white American that has an upper economic background and is from New York. Bella is a southeast Asian that is interested in a comedy club and sexual experiences with boys.

Content-A lot of the show’s content is actually realistic for college. Leighton has to experience being a closeted lesbian. Whitney has to go through a scandal where she hooks up with her male married soccer coach. Kimberly loses her virginity to her long-term boyfriend, resulting in them breaking up. She is then having sex with a guy who actually has a girlfriend that Kimberly was unaware of. Bella has to go through wanting to be sexually active but also facing a sexual assault case with one of the guys in her comedy club. With this being stated the relationships in this show are pretty believable and could actually happen in college.

Friendship- The show features these four girls amongst other people being friends. These friendships may have a rocky start but overall, they are caring, comforting, understanding, and helpful. Leighton is dumped by her high school friends who never considered her their friends. She then becomes less critical and nicer to her roommates. Whitney is shown to make friendships with her soccer team and face a player not liking her because the person believes that Whitney is privileged due to her mom being the senator. Bella tried to make friends in her comedy club while actually being accepted into the comedy club through an application. Kimberly tries to fit in at her work-study position and be friendly to her roommates as she struggles to fit in due to her low-class economic background. She also does not feel that she is as intelligent because she is unable to keep up with her academics.

The Humor- A comedian that was once on the humorous show “The Office” named Mindy Kaling is the producer of this show. This gives the storylines a bit of humor and edge for audiences to enjoy. Some of the things that the character say are unbelievable and funny but also goes really well with the overall plotline.

To sum up, the overall show really depicts college life and what it’s like to be a student in college. Unfortunately, many shows in today’s society feature teenagers in high school or do not give the best portrayal of college life. If you are interested, you start binge-watching the show today on HBO Max.
