Obama Signs Bill Removing “Negro” from Federal Laws

President Obama continues to make historical changes for the better! Obama has signed a bill removing the words “Oriental” and “Negro” from federal laws. Many of us look at these terms as being outdated and you’re probably wondering why they are even still apart of our laws; and so was President Obama. Due to the new decision, the words will be replaced with “Asian Americans” and “African Americans”. The new changes have been made to try and modernize the older terms and will also change other words, like “Spanish Speaking” to Hispanic. Nice to know our government is making some up to date and long over due changes!

African-American 8-Year Old Girl Becomes Youngest Person Ever to Receive a Scholarship to the University of North Texas

Ladies you can truly accomplish any goal you have in mind; and that is exactly what young Jordin Phipps felt when her motivational video went viral. The University of North Texas recently presented Phipps with a $10,000 scholarship after seeing a video of her wearing the school’s shirt and giving a motivational speech.

In her video, she says “I will start my day in a positive way! I will be respectful the words I say. I will pay attention and I will do my best and I will study hard for every test!” Representatives from the university gave the check to her during a school assembly. Jordin was overjoyed and already has ideas of majoring in engineering but is still deciding. You go girl!

Olympian John Carlos Applauds Colin Kaepernick

One of the first well known athletes to protest the National Anthem is giving his two cents on the recent NFL protests. John Carlos received his bronze medal at the 1968 Olympics, where he raised his fist in protest on the medal podium. Carlos said him and his American teammate’s demonstration was about bringing people of color together. Carlos applauds Colin Kaepernick and his efforts to bring awareness to racial injustice and police brutality. “He’s bringing attention to the issues. And how did he bring attention to them? The same way we did 48 years ago in terms of giving America shock treatment. That’s the only way they move,” he said. Carlos is proud of the NFL protests and says “this is a movement, not a moment.” We couldn’t agree more John!
