“Wake up and Makeup” is the phrase that inspires Graduating senior Entrepreneurship major Malinda DeVane to get up every day and go after her passion for makeup. Malinda was able to sit down and discuss what inspires her and about her business Faces by Faye.
Q: What inspired your passion for makeup?
Malinda: “I grew up watching my mom do makeup and that inspired me to want to start it. I used to sneak and put her eyeshadow on without her knowing before I went to school.”
Q: What was the process like when you first started?
Malinda: “I would watch a lot of makeup videos on YouTube, and I just started getting more products and learning different looks and I just started getting better and better. I would practice on my cousin Ashley and that’s how I started learning on other people.”
Q: What are some of your favorite makeup artists or YouTube creators that inspire you?
Malinda: “I like Aaliyah J, Jackie Aina, and a celebrity makeup artist I really like is Olivia Song.”
Q: Where did the inspiration for the name Face By Faye come from?
Malinda: “Face By Faye just came to me because I wanted something catchy and my middle name is Faye so it was perfect for me.”
Q: Where do you hope your business will be in 5 years?
Malinda: “My dream is to be a celebrity makeup artist one day and I want to have my own cosmetic line which is why I chose to major in entrepreneurship so I could use the skills I gain here and take it into my business. I just hope it continues to grow.”
Q: What is some advice that you have to young girls who want to start using makeup?
Malinda: “Just buy some makeup and watch YouTube videos and keep practicing on yourself and friends and family and eventually you’ll get the hang of it.”
