The Real HU on the Field: Hampton’s Football History and Tradition

The Hampton University Football team for centuries has been the center of pride and school spirit for our home by the sea.

In 1902, The Hampton University Football team played their first game. Starting with a win on the field defeating Armstrong Manual Training.

Hampton only played one game for four season until 1906 when the team expanded the schedule to five games.

Hampton’s football team has moved through several conferences throughout their career. Finally landing in the CAA in 2022.

The iconic rivalry of Hampton University against Howard University began in 1908.

Both schools have gained the nickname of “HU” and both football teams charge the field to determine who earns the nickname of “The Real HU”.

The overall series is led by Hampton University, as our home by the sea has won the last eight games.

“It’s been 13 years since the Pirates lost. As one Hampton alum on my staff put it, the last time Howard beat Hampton, The Fugees were still together.” said former President Barack Obama in 2010 Commencement address to Hampton University

This tradition brings alumni, Hampton students and supporters to Washington, DC to watch this momentous event.

In 2021, The Truth and Service Classic was established when Hampton University and Howard faced off at Audi Field in Washington, DC.

Hampton won the inaugural Truth and Service Classic by 26 points.

Although this game brings out our competitive nature, it also showcases the community that exist from two iconic historically black universities.

The Hampton University Pirates represent more than their performance on the field. Pirates embody the legacy, tradition of pride of generations.

“HU VS HU” is more than just a football game. It is a celebration of the Black excellence that continues to exist at our home by the sea.

The Hampton University Pirates look forward to this weekend as they successfully claim the title of “The Real HU”.
