Going away to college that is far from your hometown seems like one of the best decisions anyone could ever make. There’s no surprise visits and you are truly independent. These are some of the reasons why I love being away from home, but the holidays is one thing that makes me reconsider this decision. This is my fourth and final year of college and the third year I have not been able to go home for Thanksgiving. I am originally from Chicago, IL. which is 14 hours away from Hampton, VA. I believe that spending $100-200 for one weekend isn’t the smartest thing to do. It’s not easy being away from your family for so long, but there are other options so you’re holiday won’t be a drag.

If you prefer to stay on campus or in the area, find friends who are staying too. You are not alone and it’s best to find company in those you are in the same predicament. Prepare your own Thanksgiving dinner (hopefully, you’ve been paying attention to your family’s recipes.) Nonetheless, you and your friends can have an amazing meal and play games creating the perfect Friendsgiving. Try not to be so wrapped up in social media, for you’ll truly miss out on the good vibes you’re surrounded by.

Another option is to go home with a friend that stays relatively close to campus. If you can’t spend the holidays with your family, then it doesn’t hurt to spend it with your friend’s family. There’s always love to go around. The best part is his/her family wouldn’t think twice about making sure you’re fed. Regardless, you will be surrounded by people who will take you in as their own to make sure you don’t feel left out during the Holidays. It should be interesting, nonetheless, to experience Thanksgiving in a new environment filled with traditions that may be different from your family’s. Just try to be present physically and mentally the entire weekend. You don’t want to be a terrible guest.

Most importantly, don’t forget about your family back home. So you don’t feel like you’re missing out on your own traditions and family fun, be sure to FaceTime or Skype your family. With technology so accessible in modern times, we have the option to be present virtually. Take advantage of this! You are less likely to feel homesick because you can still feel involved. One thing to remember is to not overindulge. You don’t want to take away from the new experiences and memories you are making away from home.

The type of energy you possess is the type of energy you will attract. Try to stay positive and enjoy the ones you are around. Fill your days with love whether it comes from your own family, your friends, or your friends’ family. The holidays are meant to be happy times! Remember that piece of advice and your Thanksgiving should be an enjoyable one. If you’re like me, winter break is right around the corner and you’ll be reunited with your family very soon.
