Making the Most Out of Halloween as a Broke College Student

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

Although Halloween just passed, the festivities are still going on and let’s be honest with ourselves for a second. If you’re in college, you are probably on a budget of about $50 dollars a week because you don’t want to overspend that little money you have in that bank account. Holidays certainly don’t help either, because if you have a boo, you have to get them a gift and then if there’s a party you have to go out and get an outfit. Well, Halloween is this week, and as college students, we definitely need to have fun and make the most out of the college experience so you don’t want to miss out on anything. Here are some tips to have fun and make the most out of Halloween even on a struggling kid college budget.

TIP 1: STAY IN AND WATCH SOME SCARY MOVIES WITH FRIENDS

What’s more fun than just grabbing a bunch of close friends in a comfortable and cozy dorm room watching the best Halloween movies ever to come across our TV screen. Any of these options will be good to watch: Hocus Pocus, any of the Halloweentown movies, Goosebumps, Nightmare before Christmas, or if you want to get really scary Halloween I and Halloween II. While watching movies, pop in two bowls of popcorn (and the microwavable ones are no more than $1.99 at the dollar store) and get ready to be scared.

TIP 2: CARVE PUMPKINS

Now I know this one may sound a little lame but if you’re down for a night in on a budget and you want to celebrate in the Halloween festivities then grab some friends and get those knives ready and carve some pumpkins. Now I must warn you, carving pumpkins is definitely a lot harder than it looks so I would suggest watching some youtube videos where it lays out each step so you don’t make too much of a mess. And then after you finish carving, you can light up the pumpkins with candles (and again you can get these at the dollar store). This will definitely be a fun one shared with friends.

TIP 3: GO OUT TO A FREE PARTY OR A KICKBACK THAT IS NOT TOO FAR AWAY

If you don’t like any of the above ideas and you’re more of a going out person then I would definitely consider going out with some friends to a lowkey kickback and Halloween vibes. Go to a party where the people in attendance are not as dressed up in costume or they’re wearing costumes that aren’t hard to put together. This way you can go and have fun with friends but it also keeps your money right in your pocket and safe inside your bank account.

In conclusion, never let being a broke college student stop you from having fun with your friends and from enjoying yourself. Trust me, I go to Hampton University and I just had my homecoming so I definitely don’t have my pockets overflowing with money right now but I’m still making sure I enjoy myself for Halloween.
