Hampton University is home to many women STEM majors. We took the time to chat with the exuberant Aliya Edwards. As a senior Biology major at Hampton, Aliya is ready to make the most out of the academic year and move closer to her career in the STEM field.Â
Â
HC: Why did you major in Biology?
Aliya: I’ve always had a passion to be a doctor. My grandma was a nurse and I was always around the health field. So I was inspired by her. Also, when I was in high school I did a medical program where I took dual credit classes.
Â
HC: What do you enjoy the most about being a biology major?
Aliya: It’s very hands-on! I’m a hands on type of person. So I really learn a lot.
Â
HC: What is the most difficult part about your major?
Aliya: The most difficult part is probably time management. You have a lot of assignments to do and a lot of homework. The best way to do it is to just keep up with it and to stay on top of your assignments.
Â
HC: What is your favorite class?
Aliya: Probably Microbiology because you learn about different viruses and bacteria!
Â
HC: Biology or chemistry?
Aliya: Biology! I hate chemistry! Biology is about life, how life works, how it’s formed and developed and became what it is now!
Â
HC: Speaking of chemistry, do you have any “chemistry” with anyone on campus?
Aliya: No! Not at this moment. I am good! I’m happy being by myself.
Â
HC: What would you tell other young girls who want to pursue a STEM major/career?
Aliya: Be dedicated! Be motivated! Be determined! It can knock you down. Being a bio major or any STEM major can knock you down. Stick with it. If that’s your ultimate goal, stick with your goal and don’t let anything hold you back from being what you want to be.
Â
HC: What are your plans after graduation?
Aliya: After I graduate from Hampton I want to go to medical school, probably Howard or Meharry.
Â
HC: What is your dream job?
Aliya: For the longest I’ve wanted to be a doctor! I want to be an OB/GYN and own my own practice. And on top of that, I want to have a chain of practices.
Â
HC: What do you enjoy the most about the biology department here at Hampton?
Aliya: The biology department is like a family. It’s small. Everybody knows everybody. So you always have help. If you need to talk to your professor, they’re always there for you. So you can talk about what you aren’t understanding and get whatever help you need.
Â
HC: What are two goals you have for your senior year?
Aliya: To enjoy every moment. Every last moment that I have here and to have a good academic year!
Â
We wish you the best of luck, Aliya! Have a wonderful senior year!
