I know I can’t be the only one who’s had a shift in my mindset this past year. Between the worldwide pandemic and simply getting older, I’ve done my best to become the woman I want to be. Quarantine gave me the perfect time to sit back and really reflect. I like to say 2020 was my year of reflection, and 2021 is my year for application. A new season is a chance to start fresh and reevaluate. With spring right around the corner, this is the perfect time to spring clean your life by setting goals and manifesting them.

Becoming the woman you want to be is easier than it sounds. Setting goals can get you closer to becoming her. A key to setting goals is to simply write them down. Very few people actually set goals, and even fewer people actually put pen to paper and write them down. Less than 3% of the population writes down their goals. Studies say that you’re 50% more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down. So when you think about it, you’re already ahead by just jotting them down in a notebook.

Think about the woman you want to become. Ask yourself what she looks like. Does she have that dream internship? Is she better at saving money? Does she go to the gym? Does she ignore texts from toxic exes? All of these things are different, but they have one thing in common–they are all things you want to work on. No goal is too small or too big to achieve.

After you write your goals down, try actually working toward them.  My favorite thing to do is make my goals into a long checklist. There’s nothing more satisfying than looking back on your goals and seeing how much you achieved.

Along with setting goals comes manifesting those goals. Manifestation is also sometimes called the laws of attraction. It’s about turning your dreams and goals into reality. There’s power in the tongue. Visualizing your goals and dreams and then saying them outloud makes them a lot more likely to happen. You have the ability to attract what you want in life by just simply focusing on them.

I feel like there’s this misconception that manifestation is a spiritual thing, but science actually proves that it really works. The law of attraction says whatever you focus on creates an emotion, which defines your reality. Your brain has the ability to focus on the things that are important to you. You have to train your brain to visualize what makes you feel good, i.e. your goals to become the woman you want to be. Make sure to let go of any resistance and limiting beliefs. Phrases like “I can’t” and “I hope” block your goals and manifestations. Try phrases like “I am” and “I have.” Manifesting your goals by already claiming that you have achieved them is important.

Set goals to work toward what would genuinely make you happy with your life. Don’t only make goals because it will make your parents proud, or it will look good on instagram. Be intentional when setting and manifesting your goals. Don’t let social media determine your happiness and goals. The woman you want to become may not necessarily look like that girl on twitter who moved to a big city and bought a Range Rover within a year. Everyone has a different purpose in life. Always remember that comparison is the thief of joy. Setting goals based on your happiness is the most important part. The key words in that are “YOUR happiness.”

Hello! My name is Kiara Davis, I am a junior strategic communications (PR) major, marketing minor from the land of 10,000 lakes, Saint Paul, Minnesota. I really love writing and have since I was young. I also really enjoy the performing arts which include dancing, singing, and musical theatre. Ever since I was young I have been apart of dance and musical programs. As for my goals in life, I would like to see myself working for an advertising agency, and eventually achieving my biggest career goal of becoming a business owner. My passion includes contributing to the change of the stereotypical view of African-American women in society. Black women are amazing in every aspect and I would like to help the entire world recognize that.
