Greta Thunberg and Her Call to Panic

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

The 2020 World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos Kloster, Switzerland left people around the world inspired yet also confused about whether or not it’s finally time to panic about the rapid climate changes and environmental issues. Activist Greta Thunberg made it clear that it’s time to be truly concerned about the world we live in. Thunberg claimed in Davos that “Our house is still on fire. Your inaction is fueling the flames by the hour. We are still telling you to panic, and to act as if you loved your children above all else”.

Thunberg has been known to call out business and political leaders for taking too long to take action or not taking action at all. The seventeen-year-old firmly believes that people are not treating the issue as seriously as they should. Her speech in Davos this year reflected upon her speech in 2019 when she voiced to leaders that their hope is not wanted, only their panic so they can face the reality and gravity of the climate issue.

Now that the world is finally panicking, questions such as “what can we do?” have surfaced. The answer is simple: continue to panic. The depth of the world’s fear must be felt by world leaders. If they do not believe that we are in danger no progress can be made. It is mostly up to the youth of today to implement change and push others to do the same. Therefore, if you are someone who is unmoved by the problems around us today, get up, get out, and help implement change to keep our planet safe and preserve our future.
