Hey, Her Campus readers! This week’s Greek of the Week is Shaunna Gay. Shaunna Gay is a Junior computer engineering major from Houston, TX. She is a Spring 2019 initiate into the Gamma Theta chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She is also a member of the New Era Modeling Troupe, Black Girls Do Stem, and the U.S. army. This multi talented beauty even does freelance makeup so hit her up for any of your makeup needs!

HC: Why did you choose Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.?

SG: I wanted to become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated because where else could I be this pretty? But seriously my morals and ideals aligned with those of AKA. Growing up I always saw AKAs giving back, working hard to uplift each other and the community. Shout out to my mom – a real OG.

Are you in a relationship? Why or why not?

SG: No, I am not because as a wise woman once said, “n***** aint sh** frfr” but I am open to a relationship.

Do you feel like people have treated you differently since you’ve become greek?

SG: Overall, no but I do believe that people make assumptions about me because of the organization I belong to. I haven’t seen the full effect since I was only on campus for two months after crossing. But I’m tall and people have always stared at me, so now I just don’t know which reason causes them to stare. I’m still waiting on the boys though, aren’t they supposed to like pretty girls? *laughs*

What are your long term career goals?

SG: First, I want my butter bar from the U.S. Army. The Army has been a long and shaky road for me but I’m determined. Civilian wise, I don’t know exactly where I want to work but network development and computer hardware are two things I’m very interested in. I’ve learned that it’s okay not to have your whole life planned out and I’m going with the flow.

What has been your favorite part about being in a sorority?

SG: My favorite part about being in my sorority is the sisterhood. Being an only child, it’s always just been me and my mom. But now going everywhere and meeting different sorors has been an amazing experience. The network of people I have access to is endless.

What makes you excited about returning to school? What makes you nervous?

SG: I am excited to hit the ground running because I have learned a lot being gone. I want to really hone in on my grades and get the most out of my college experience. I’m no longer holding back because I am totally confident in what I bring to the table. Although, I am nervous that my past might hold me back (@judicial affairs) and the gossip. But people are always going to judge and talk about you so I live by this Beyonce quote: “You know you that b**** when you cause all this conversation.”

If you could meet anyone in the world who would it be and why?

SG: You know what, y’all can say I’m basic but Beyonce. I’m from Houston and I’ve always wanted to meet her. She is a genius. She has traveled all across the world and encountered people from all walks of life. I can only imagine that she would give great advice.

If a guy was interested in you how would you want him to approach you?

SG: Honestly, I would just want him to walk up to me and be forward. I know that might be weird and awkward but I do not pick up on cues well. I think it would be cute if he approached me with a pick up line. I’m corny and it shows that he put some effort in. But no tree jokes.

What personal accomplishment are you most proud of?

SG: I am most proud of passing the PT test for the army. It was a struggle for me for a long time but I am proud of the tenacity and strength that I had to eventually pass it.

What is the most valuable lesson that you’ve learned in the last year?

SG: Other people can’t make you feel inferior without your consent. They don’t have the power to make you feel any different than how you want to feel. A strong mindset is very important and I have come to that realization this past year.
