As we come to the end of March, Women’s History Month, I reflect on the many inspiring ladies in my own family. I have the privilege of coming from an extraordinary group of women who have shaped me in every way, such as being generous, caring, diligent, and resilient. I continuously witness the elegance and poised nature the women in my family share, making fashion a statement as always and holding themselves in high regards. Within my family I see my own version of the love of girlhood, womanhood, and sisterhood.

I come from a family of women who personify a great deal of wisdom. They have given me a sense of awareness and confidence on who I am, how I should carry myself, and how I should show up in this world because of their insights. In becoming a woman, as I am getting older these insights, whether it’s a piece of knowledge they have given me verbally or just the way they move in this world, they have never left my sight.

I was always taught to be a leader, be independent and never follow the crowd, stay true to myself, speak up when I need to, stay in my books, and accomplish my goals. There’s too much knowledge that will never go to waste because of how much they have poured into me. I was born into a family of women in which I have seen successful black women all around. They never fail in making family a priority and bringing us all together, while being role models in all their titles.

It is a privilege to come from a family where the confidence, love, and guidance was continuously instilled in me from the beginning. I reflect on the many characteristics that I take from each and every one of them that I can bring to the areas I show up in. As Black women it is important to conduct ourselves in a way that is worthy to society and set examples to the younger generation.
