As we approach the holiday season, it is almost customary to reflect on our lives thus far and all that encompasses them. Students gather around at school to share what they’re grateful for, college students book plane tickets to see family after months, and friends fellowship over apartment dining tables for Friendsgivings all over the country. Generous people purchase gifts for Angel Tree recipients, those with the time to give volunteer at soup kitchens and food banks, and we spend a little more time and effort on picking out the perfect Bath and Body Works set for a loved one. With all that’s happening in our world, it seems like we have more anger, division, and stress in this holiday season than joy and togetherness. That being said, now more than ever is the time to express gratitude for all in our lives that is good. Let me be the first.
I am so grateful for my college education. The ability to be able to attend such an amazing HBCU, and not only earn a degree, but gain friendships, opportunities, and experiences that I could only gain at Hampton is such a blessing. Even in the times where it gets difficult, or feels overwhelming, I just stay focused on how passionate I am in obtaining my dream career. And, every day, I am thankful for the chance to get one step closer.
It almost feels as if all the people in my life who care for me are a reflection of the love I pour out into the world. I’m so thankful for all of that love.
I’m grateful for my people. It’s incredible to think about how many people really love and support me. Every time I receive a heartfelt message, or a congratulations, or simply a hug, I remember that I have a greater impact on others than I realize. It almost feels as if all the people in my life who care for me are a reflection of the love I pour out into the world. I’m so thankful for all of that love.
I’m grateful for the chance to learn, grow and evolve with every day. I know that life is just endless opportunities to be better, or treat others with kindness, or chase my dreams, or try something new, or tell someone I love them. I’m thankful for the passion and drive I have that motivates me become the person I wish to be. I’m grateful for ambition, lofty goals, and high expectations.
While those seem like broad categories, my gratitude extends beyond just the basics. I’m grateful for all the little things that life has to offer. I’m grateful for nice strangers that crack jokes in the grocery store aisles or watch your purse at the airport. I’m grateful for a heated car when it’s 20 degrees out, or a perfectly crafted hot chai latte. I’m thankful for a great playlist that lifts my mood. I’m grateful for an early summer morning where it’s already 80 degrees when I wake up. I’m grateful for an A on a test I studied hard for. I’m grateful for delicious food, prepared with love and intent. I’m grateful for running into old friends at restaurants, malls, and everywhere else. I’m grateful for beautiful sunsets, ocean views, trees with leaves that change colors, sand underneath my feet at the beach, and flowers in full bloom.
There is so much to be thankful for, not just in the holiday season, but everyday.
