Embracing the Individual

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

To be an individual means what?  “To promote the exercise of one’s goals and desires, independence and self-reliance”. No but what does it really mean? Understanding your self worth, differentiating yourself from other, and understanding that you were wonderfully and perfectly made by God. As a college freshman I struggled with understanding my path and purpose here at Hampton University. Transitioning from a high school student who graduated top of their class. A student who served as the class president, valedictorian, and who was top of their class. How do you remain confident in yourself when you feel as if you are constantly comparing yourself to the other great people who surround you? Here are a few things to keep in mind when you feel as if you just don’t fit in.

  1. Understand your talents and what YOU bring to the table.

The hardest thing about attending such a prestigious university is feeling unprepared. Find what you are good at. What separates you from others? What makes you different? The greatest gift that you have been blessed with is your character and personality. This is what makes you different from everyone else.

  1. Understand that the next four years are all a learning experience

Life’s lessons come in increments. What this means is that each obstacle we face in life is just preparation for greater. Being a college student it is often easy to get caught up in the wrong identity. Trying to not only find yourself but also create an image for yourself. As being a college student many questions arise daily about your self image. Searching for your purpose and meaning is one of the most vital components of growth. Discovering yourself in college is an experience like none other.

  1. Embrace your individualism

Understand that no one else’s opinions matter. Everyone is different and everyone’s circumstance aren’t the same. Know that what God has for you is for you. No one can take that away from you. This can often become difficult to understand when you begin to compare yourself to others. See that’s the problem you must embrace your individuality and know that you were meant to be different.
