Don’t Hate Me: Popular Things I Just Can’t Get With

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

I am not your average person, and because of this, there are a lot of things that the average person likes that I just can’t understand why. There are many popular trends, clothes, shoes and etc. that I just can’t get with. Although not liking things isn’t a crime, my disapproval of some things has definitely earned me some side eyes from my friends, but they learn to live with it. For instance, when I told one of my friends that I wasn’t that big of a fan of latex pants, she just couldn’t fathom how I couldn’t (just like I couldn’t fathom how she could) like them. Latex pants were really popular last year and will probably continue to be for a while, but I don’t see myself wearing them anytime in the future. Because I’ve never worn them, I couldn’t tell you if they’re comfortable or not, but I can tell you they definitely look uncomfortable. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want to walk around in pants that just look uncomfortable. Every time I see someone in them, they’re literally all I can focus on, but not in a good way.

Another thing I’m not the biggest fan of is UGG slides. Now, I’ll always be first in line to buy some UGG boots, but I just want to know who thought of making furry slides. I mean kudos to them because they’re popular, but they’re just not cute, like at all. On top of them not being cute, they look like a safety hazard, too, lol. If I had a dollar for every person I’ve seen trip or trip and fall in those slides, I wouldn’t be rich but I’d definitely have enough money to get lunch from Five Guys, whose food is way too expensive, (which is why there are holes in my pockets) two days in a row. I definitely think their main use should be house shoes, unless your house has stairs. If you’re going to be stumbling, it would be best if it was on flat ground. I say all this to say that I think they’re ugly. Yes, I’m clumsy so I’m destined for a good few stumbles anyway, but at least I’ll be stumbling in cute shoes.

Next up, is the phrase “as you should.” I know that when saying this people don’t mean any harm so I would never respond in a way that would seem like I’m offended, but I can’t say that it’s my favorite thing to hear. I can’t say I know exactly why it gives me the feeling that it does, especially since I know what it means. Like I said, I know what people mean but it still feels like someone is trying to tell me what to do. It gives me the feeling of when you go and decide to wash the dishes and as you’re picking up a dish your mom all of a sudden wants to demand that you wash the dishes. And, on top of that, I’m not even sure what to even say when someone says that. The last time someone commented that under a post of mine I didn’t know what to say so I just said “period”, which is something I don’t even say all too much but that’s literally all I could come up with. It’s not going anywhere, though, so I guess I need to come up with a list of potential responses.

I saved the absolute worst for last, and I’m pretty sure this one is going to step on a lot of toes. I’m not sure why these shoes have made a comeback in the way that they did, but they did. The popularization of Crocs has to be one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen. These are way worse than the UGG slides and everything I’ve named combined and timed by ten. All of my friends are obsessed with these little ugly shoes and for the life of me I can’t figure out why. They look ridiculous and the little pieces people put in the holes don’t make them look any better. I thought they couldn’t get any worse and then they came out with the carpet Crocs (y’all know the ones with the carpet looking fuzz on the inside). Like, why? When I see Crocs, I think of many things, but the main thing I think of is the man from Lilo and Stitch who keeps dropping his ice cream. Yes, I know that was random, but that is literally what pops into my head every time I see them. I low-key have beef with that man because he has wasted way too much ice cream for my liking, so associating them with him doesn’t make me like them any better. Crocs are just terrible and if they had hands we could really fight just because, lol. All I know is I hope we don’t ever get to the day where they try to do something like add wedges to them or something. I can’t wait for the day they go back out of style.

If you’re reading this, you have made it to the end of one of my overly dramatic rants that my family and friends hear often, and if I stepped on any toes, sorry not sorry. These are just things I can’t get with.
