Cardi B and Nicki Minaj Beef Comes to Life at NYFW

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

September 7th was a somewhat calm Friday night on the timeline. Twitter was recovering from the untimely death of rapper Mac Miller and re-tweeting endless photo-shopped “Ralph” memes.

Then, out of nowhere, Cardi B and Nicki Minaj climbed the trending charts. But not for a new collaboration between the two artists…

TMZ set the timeline on fire when they released a video showing an apparent altercation between rappers Nicki Minaj and Cardi B at New York Fashion Week’s annual Harper’s Bazaar Icon party.

Footage shows Cardi B lunging at Nicki while security guards kept them apart. The altercation ended, but not before Cardi could throw one of her chunky red platform heels towards Nicki. Paparazzi caught glimpses of the two rap divas afterward. Cardi was spotted having a huge knot on her forehead while Nicki was apparently unfazed.

Hours later, of course, Cardi took to every celebrity’s favorite app: the notes app, where she wrote an extensive message that she posted on instagram.

At first, everyone was somewhat confused with what Cardi B was talking about. That is until some fans went digging into Nicki’s twitter feed and saw that Nicki had liked a tweet criticizing Cardi B’s parenting skills because of her friendship with the controversial rapper, Kodak Black.

The other situation she referenced in the post was the Motorsport miscommunication. When Nicki and Cardi both hopped on the Migos track, Motorsport, there was some confusion circling a changed Nicki verse. An interview with Cardi about said verse rubbed Nicki Minaj the wrong way, and since then the energy between the two ladies has been tense.

So, two very successful women in a male-dominated industry had a physical altercation at an elite invite-only New York Fashion Week event because of… a liked tweet and a song verse?

Days later, Nicki seemed just as bewildered as the fans about the situation. She responded on her latest episode of Queen Radio sounding very embarrassed by the entire situation.

“The way they passed by looking at this disgusting commotion. I was mortified. I was in an Alexandre Vauthier gown—off the  runway—and I could not believe how humiliated it all felt…” said the rapper on the show, sounding disdainful.

Nicki also scorned Cardi for attacking her and said that the new mother might be suffering from postpartum depression. She said to Cardi on her show, “The world gave you a blessing of a beautiful bundle of joy, and the only thing on your mind after you [gave birth] was to attack people and to stop their bags. And you wanna let your publicist write something about stopping bags?”

The situation was caused by a lot of he-said, she-said with both artists not directly addressing each other until the altercation this past Friday. Both Cardi and Nicki have acknowledged previously that their supposed beef was more “fanmade” than realistic, and now all of the sudden it’s real?

Who knows? Maybe the two rappers will eventually patch things up like Meek Mill and Drake recently did. Or maybe they will just have beef forever.
