Campus Cutie: Breanna Sumner

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

Breanna Sumner is a Junior Marketing major from Virginia Beach, Virginia and she is this week’s Campus Cutie!

HC: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

BS: Other than school and work, I watch Netflix and listen to music a lot. Me, my roommate, and my best friend just got a dog a while back. So she’s been taking up a lot of our time since she’s still a puppy.

HC: What do you enjoy most about Hampton?

BS: Well I just transferred last year, so I find myself a lot of the time comparing Hampton and Howard. The one thing that I think benefits me the most is the overall atmosphere, even though the social [aspect] is obviously different from Howard. It is pretty much the same in the fact that it’s family oriented. Everybody supports each other and everyone is involved. It’s just an overall uplifting atmosphere.

HC: I saw that you were active in the Miss. Omega Psi Phi pageant, what was your role specifically?

BS: I was contestant manager. My best friend, Kenley Duke, was the coordinator. I did the pageant my sophomore year at Howard so she knew I understood what it took from a contestant point-of-view with dedication, coming to practices on time, getting your pieces ordered, fundraising, and all of that stuff. So she put me in charge of making sure all if the girls were on track.

HC: Could you see yourself putting together a major event as such?

BS: ABSOLUTELY, I have several ideas. I’m trying to start my own non-profit, it’s called “Piece by Piece”. I’m currently working with Boo Williams Sportsplex [and] I’m putting together a toy drive for Christmas. They have a big Christmas tournament every year so I am working in conjunction with them. I’m still trying to find a way to incorporate Hampton students.

HC: I saw that you went to the Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Summit. What exactly was that and how was that experience?

BS: Dean Credle asked me to join, because I have a slight interest in Entrepreneurial Studies and being an entrepreneur. Basically, it was just panel discussions, meet and greets, and guest speakers. They just talked about the importance of entrepreneurship and having people around you that have that type of spirit so we can constantly push each other. It was pretty amazing! I’ve never been to Houston so that was fun itself and then I was able to network with amazing people.

HC: What are some tips that you would give someone who is transitioning into adulthood

BS: Something that is super important is being financially responsible or responsible in all aspects but, especially financially. My first few years I would just spend spend spend on whatever and just live life as is if had nothing to worry about and it kind of backfires on me now. When I think back like [I’m like] oh, “I should’ve invested,” or, “I should’ve saved,” or even create a fund that I can go and dip into when times get hard. Because sometimes I’m just STRUGGLING. So yeah, just being financially responsible and think past the “now” by planning ahead.

HC: What is a quote that you live by?

BS: This might not make sense but I tell people this all the time and some people get it and some people don’t but my dad always says to me, “You don’t score until you score.” I think he got it from a movie *laughs* I don’t know.

HC: Do you wish you grew up in a different generation?

BS: Sometimes I think about that. I think back in the 90’s things were different with the ambiance, especially in college. I feel like back then they had more of a face to face type of interaction [and] technology played a huge role in that. I don’t feel like we have a lot of face to face interaction like they did and it just builds a different type of understanding and those relationships are stronger

HC: What is your all-time favorite movie?

BS: The Little Mermaid *laughs*. Me and my bestfriend know it front to back. I love Disney movies.

HC: Would you rather be famous when you are alive and forgotten when you die or unknown when you are alive but famous after you die?

BS: I guess unknown [when I’m alive] because I wouldn’t want some of the things that come with fame and fortune like the scrutiny and being in media all the time. So I think I’d rather be behind the scenes with my glow and be recognized for what I’ve done.
