A Letter To The Freest Black Woman I Know

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

This is a letter to the freest Black woman I know, to express the gratitude, strength, unconditional love, and joy she has continuously brought into my life. Free as in, authentically and effortlessly herself, pouring love and empathy into every aspect of who she is. The freest Black woman I know is undoubtedly Lisa Rose, the woman whom I am so lucky to call my mom. Her essence and aura are the epitome of freeness, as she inspires me every day to live my life as fearlessly and truthfully as she does. I am glad to have such a wonderful human being like my mom in my life to guide and mentor me through any and every endeavor. Growing up and observing all of the triumphs my mother has gone through in her life has taught me that I should never shy away from obstacles that may come my way. She has instilled in me the importance of self-love, and to never view my Blackness as a weakness but rather embrace it wholeheartedly. My mom taught me to find the free spirit that lives within us all, express myself through the things I love, and bring myself the most joy. I admire and respect so many strong Black women in my life because how my own mom has been my role model. When I think of the depth of the word free, I think of every aspect of my beautiful mom. A letter to Lisa Rose, the freest Black woman I know, for I am so lucky to be your daughter. <3
