The month of February is Black History Month in the United States. This month highlights the achievements and extensive culture of Black people. The movement was begun in 1917 by historian Carter G. Woodson and formally recognized in 1976. Today, millions of people around the country recognize this month as a time of celebration and reflection of our achievements. This month, it’s essential to learn and show support for Black people and our culture. So, here are 7 things to consider doing to maximize your Black History Month!

Support the Arts

This black history month, consider supporting various black art movements! Whether it be dance, art, or music, b. Check out art shows highlighting black artists or visit a performance given by a black-owned dance studio. For music, NPR has a collection of black artists doing their Tiny Desk Concert series. Outside of these, check out Black YouTubers, streamers, and other creatives online and continue to stream their content. Don’t forget to consider donating to these groups to show support! For a deeper understanding of these important movements, consider reading up on the Black Arts Movement.

View Media Highlighting Black Culture and History

This month, check out shows featuring black casts and highlighting black history. View historical shows and movies such as Pose and Selma to learn more about iconic movements and periods. In addition to this, watch programs that don’t just focus on black trauma. For me, this includes movies such as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Black-ish. Also, don’t forget to check out the Black Film & TV sections on your favorite streaming platform!

Visit Museums and Cultural Centers

There are numerous museums and centers across the country dedicated to highlighting the rich and extensive histories of black life. This month, try visiting some of these museums to learn about your own culture and other cultures across the US and the world. I would suggest checking out some museums and centers within your hometown or state to gain insight on what life was like in the past. In addition to this, visit some of the national museums such as The National Civil Rights Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. I personally love the National Civil Rights Museum as its full of history and in my hometown! You should also consider doing virtual tours of museums located across the country.

Update your book collection

This month, consider upgrading your personal library and reading list with works by black authors. Whether you like fiction, sci-fi, or history, be sure to upgrade your collection with black authors in these genres. Additionally, consider joining a book club dedicated to black authors. Additionally, check out black-owned bookstores located across the US.

Support Black-Owned Businesses

Today, there are over 120,000 black-owned businesses in the US! However, COVID-19 has drastically affected black-owned businesses at a much higher rate than others. This month, take time to support these businesses. Our help is needed now more than ever! Be on the lookout for black restaurants, spas, studios, retail stores, and more around your hometown! Check out online platforms like Etsy and Miirya to find a wide selection of goods. Miirya, in particular, is dedicated to featuring black creatives and their works! What’s a better way to show support during this month than showing support for your favorite black-owned business?

Support Black Civil Rights Organizations and Charities

Given the current state of civil rights in our country, our support is needed now more than ever. Spend time supporting, donating, and even volunteering with organizations that continue to seek equality and justice for Black people. There are a wide variety of organizations that fight for justice such as voting rights, equality, and equity. I suggest finding grassroots organizations within your hometown! These organizations need our help to continue the fight for justice. Here are some sites that include a variety of black civil rights organizations and charities!
