Black Swan

Black Swan is a mind-bending thriller about a young female dancer named Nina who is a part of an illustrious dance company. She lives with her overbearing mother and, for the latter half of her life, has been sheltered in their New York apartment. Ballet rules her life, and finally, she is chosen for the lead role as the swan princess at her dance company. After receiving the news that she had been picked for this lead role, Nina’s life begins a dark downward spiral as she deals with a twisted rivalry/friendship and the pressure of embodying not only the Swan Queen, but also the Black Swan. The ending is well worth the wait as reality starts shifting right before the final performance.

Arrival

Arrival is a movie during which you will not know what you are getting until the last five minutes of the film. The movie centers around a woman who is called to lead a group of high-level professional linguists after the arrival of an alien spaceship. They are tasked with learning how to communicate with the extraterrestrials before the world erupts into war and carnage. The movie seems very straightforward at first, but as the main characters continue to have what appear to be flashbacks, everything that the viewers understand about the main characters is put into question. It all comes together at the end but you’re still guaranteed to have an “OMG” moment when you finish this movie.

Mother

This movie is not for the faint of heart. A young married couple who seemingly live in the middle of nowhere work on their marriage as the wife tries to complete renovations to the house. At the same time, her husband has trouble finding inspiration for his writing. One night a stranger knocks on their door. While the husband welcomes the stranger, encouraging them to stay as long as they need, the wife is uncomfortable in their presence. The story starts to pick up the pace when a series of unwelcome visitors come to the couple’s house and begin to wreak havoc upon the home. The story seems very normal and straightforward initially, but everything you know about the storyline falls apart in the last 15 minutes. Reality is no more and anxiety-fueled events make the viewer panic as the woman’s life shatters into tiny pieces.

10 Cloverfield Lane

This movie’s plot line starts simple. We begin with a woman who seems to be running from a bad relationship. She hurriedly packs a suitcase and starts heading to an unknown location. After getting a phone call from a man who is assumed to be her ex-boyfriend begging for her to come back, she hears on the radio that there were blackouts in major cities. Then suddenly, her car is struck, and she blacks out. When she wakes up, she is in a concrete room chained to a wall. The scenes following portray a hostage situation. The man who chained her up tells her the outside world is in carnage, and that the air is infected, but she doesn’t believe him. Anybody who watches this movie is going to think that they know exactly what’s going on, but there are two big plot twists that are going to throw them for a loop. The last twist does not happen until the last 15 minutes of the movie.

I’m Thinking of Ending Things

This is a prime example of a movie YOU HAVE to google after you finish watching it. This movie starts with a young couple driving to see the man’s parents. They are driving in a snowstorm for what seems like forever while having what seems to be like a normal conversation. Only when they got to the house did things start to seem off. Reality begins to distort, and a series of events occur that I can only describe as enthralling. Nothing is as it seems as the events begin to climax, and the viewer is left just as confused at the end as they were at the beginning. After googling what the heck went on in this movie, you’ll definitely have a “that makes sense!” moment, and will be dying to rewatch with the newfound knowledge of what this masterpiece is really about.
