5 Black Girl Anthems You Need to Add to Your Playlist This Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

Black history month is coming up, and it’s time to shine a light on some of our favorite songs that make us Black girls feel free. Here are five songs that you can blast whether you happy, sad, or want to chill throughout the month of February.

  1. Peng Black Girls Remix x ENNY X Jorja Smith

“There’s peng black girls in my area code

Dark skin, light skin, medium tone

Permed tings, braids, got minis afros” – ENNY

ENNY is a UK song rapper, singer, and songwriter. Her recent single ‘Peng Black Girls’ was released in late 2020. The single gained popularity following a remixed version with Jorja Smith. The internet loved the calm melody followed by the relatable lyrics. This song is a vibe.

2. Baby Girl x Chloe x Halle

“So don’t you forget about

The little girl that you met now

The one that’s in your spirit

She still got your back,” – Chloe x Halle

Chloe x Halle needs absolutely NO introduction. The R&B duo has been taking over the R&B scene since quarantine began. However, more recently, they have released their second studio album ‘Ungodly Hour’ on June 12, 2020. The album consists of thirteen songs, one being ‘Baby Girl’ written and produced by Chloe x Halle.

3. Don’t touch my hair x Solange

“Don’t touch my hair

When it’s the feelings I wear

Don’t touch my soul

When it’s the rhythm I know” – Solange

The queen Solange blessed us in 2016 with her third studio album ‘A Seat at the Table,” and while this album is ‘older’ it’s still very relevant to this day. The ninth track of the album is titled “Don’t touch my hair”. The vulnerable song confronts the ignorance of others while explaining the importance of black girl’s hair.

4. Good Days x SZA

“Gotta get right, tryna free my mind before the end of the world

I don’t miss no ex, I don’t miss no text

I just choose not to respond” – SZA

SZA blessed us during the holiday season with her new single ‘Good Days .’ The internet went crazy. This song talks about letting go of negativity and moving forward into the present. I think it’s a song we all needed after the wild 2020 we had.

5. BROWN SKIN GIRL x Beyoncé

“Brown skin girl

Your skin just like pearls

The best thing in the world

Never trade you for anybody else” – Beyoncé

I had to add the black girl anthem. ‘BROWN SKIN GIRL’ was a song on the album The Lion King: The Gift. After listening to this song, you can’t help but smile and dance around. Beyoncé even has some vocals from her daughter Blue Ivy Carter.

I hope these are all songs that make you feel at peace and beautiful in your skin. Make

Sure to celebrate this Black History Month safely.
