Game days on a HBCU campus go beyond the actual game and stretch wide outside the field and stands. There is an increasing amount of pride and a sense of belonging that unites the HBCU community on game days – whether you’re engaging in the lively energy of the game itself or just simply having a great time, mainly because you may not understand football too much like me!
The main attraction of the day itself is the game of course, with alumni, us students, family, and faculty roaring and cheering our team on. We’re united in fashion too as we come together and rep our school with the best fits and paraphernalia to show out! A significant time of the day everyone cannot wait for is the halftime performance, which is always my favorite. There is an abundance of history that surrounds HBCU marching bands and majorette dancers, so although we hear and see them performing in the stands, it is a great moment seeing them on the field full display.Â
The buzzing atmosphere outside the field plays a big role in shaping the HBCU community on game days also. The cultural ambiance is at an all-time high while hanging out at the tailgate and checking out the food stands and Black-owned business vendors either from local community members, alumni, or even classmates. Game days within the HBCU community is more than just the football game. New bonds are formed with your classmates alongside networking with numerous alumni who make it their mission to give you the best advice and support.
I can’t help but feel overjoyed as I take in the fact that our HBCU community is strictly designed for us Black students as we conquer this world. During these special evenings away from the ordinary life of classes and work, we are among several generations of like-minded individuals who came before us or after us filled with wisdom and success. It feels like nothing else matters in this world except us cheering each other on and enjoying one another’s company.
