12-2 A Hampton Holiday

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

The student center was packed to maximum capacity last Friday for 12-2. What better way to bring in the new school year than showing off your new wardrobe? For those new to Hampton 12-2 is the two hour long party that makes Friday’s essentially Hamptonian. The student center fills up with students listening to the hottest songs and everyone wearing the flyest fashions. Greeks stroll, people dance, and every inch of the student center is a virtual runway. If you don’t come correct, don’t come at all.

A viral video showing popular Hampton sayings said it best “are you wearing that to 12-2?” That’s because 12-2 has surpassed a regular day party and hit red carpet levels. There are no sweatpants here, no leggings and oversized tees allowed. This is a crop top, bodycon, stiletto heels only zone. It becomes a long process, planning what you were going to wear over summer break and taking to social media talking about how lit 12-2 will be. Girls and guys hit the racks searching for the perfect outfit. In high school, the first day of school fit was the most important, but at Hampton, you can’t waste your best outfit on the first day. We save our most amazing outfits for 12-2 and everyone knows it.

The first 12-2 has always been known a HU holiday. People skip class, other schools come to visit, and sometimes alumni even drop in. The first 12-2 sets the tone for all others. This year’s was no different. When Hampton admitted over 1400 freshmen, they unknowingly changed some of our most prized events. 12-2 was packed, some may say too packed with each floor filled and very little room to move! As everyone moved together in one giant crowd of Hamptonians, the heat was insane. Most people were dripping sweat, even those who were just swaying with the mass of people.

No matter the heat, the slayage was undeniable. This summer was clearly filled with shopping and lookbooks as every student stepped into the Student Center with their most popping outfit. Everyone took to Snapchat, and Instagram to show off their popping outfits with the Caption “It’s a Hampton Holiday.” Weather you were on the first floor or looking down from the third you can definitely say the first 12-2 was popping. From body cons to body suits no one was there to play only to slay. So before you head to the stu, look and the mirror and ask yourself: “You’re wearing that to 12-2?”
