This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hamilton chapter.
Not only is Taylor Healy ’15 an athlete (you might have seen her rowing for Hamilton’s crew team) and a scholar (majoring in Art History), but she also has an incredible sense of style. Chances are you’ve seen her walking around campus, rocking some chic boots matched with flowery dresses. I sat down with Taylor to ask her about her wardrobe, predictions for summer fashions, and any advice she might have for those of us looking to branch out of our traditional jeans and t-shirt attire.

How would you describe your style?
My style depends on my mood of the day. If I’m feeling the Hamilton prep vibe I throw on my J.Crew vest and equestrian boots. The next morning I might want to channel my hipster friends from home so I resort to my cut-off mom jeans and Birkenstock sandals. If I’m inspired to be particularly trendy, I’ll look to my Anthropologie romper and wedges. I hard to pinpoint my style because it varies so greatly, but I know when my outfit matches my mood, I walk with a little more confidence.

Where are your top five favorite places to shop?
Anthropology, Free People, Urban (sale rack or gift card only of course!), Wanelo, any local thrift shop, Mom’s (and Dad’s) closets.

What are the favorite articles of clothing that you own?
I love pieces that I can add to any average outfit to set it apart. I have this Native American stitched vest that I got from my mom. She bought it in Mexico in the 70s. I can throw it over skirts, shorts, dresses, the list goes on. I also have an Alpaca sweater my dad bought me in Ecuador when I was in 4th grade that I’ve finally come to appreciate. I know these are items no one else will have.

Do you have a signature look?
My signature is unpredictability.

What (or who) inspires your style?
Nature probably inspires me more than anything else. I used to describe my style as bohemian chic. I am absolutely obsessed with earthy/blush tones and flow-y silhouettes because you can always add a rough edge by pairing it with a jean vest, leather jacket, or bold jewelry. I have also always admired my cousin. As we grew up she progressed from making her own dresses out of hot glue, to interning for Isaac Mizrahi, and eventually establishing her own design business. She inspired me to look at every piece of clothing in an unconventionally way.

Favorite item of jewelry? Pair of shoes?
I have a gem barrette that I absolutely love. The colors are neutral and it is so versatile. I can wear it in my hair, clip it to a necklace, or use it as a brooch. I also love my mom’s old Frye boots because they have this great reddish tone to them.

What do you think will be the hot fashion trends for summer this year?
I tend to forge my own path, I’m not sure I’m the one to predict trends, but I guess round lens sunglasses, florals, pastels, maxi skirts, bandeaus with blazers/ vests, lace and crochet tops.

Any advice for those looking to emulate your style?
Always be looking for a way to put your own spin on an ensemble. Turn a shawl into a skirt, or buy old jeans at Salvo, cut them, and sew fabric or studs on the pocket. Ultimately, dress for you and not for others. If you walk out the door thinking at least one person might look at you funny, you’re doing something right.
