Her Campus Celebrity: Emma Raynor

Name: Emma Raynor

Class: 2018

Major: World Politics

Emma Raynor is a sophomore on the Hamilton College Women’s Swimming and Diving Team. Read on to learn more about her swimming experience and the upcoming swim season!

How long have you been swimming for?

This is my 12th year swimming.

How did you get into swimming?

I grew up in the same neighborhood as my dad, who was also a swimmer. I swam for the same club that he swam for as a kid. I also lived overseas in Africa for 10 years so the swim club was constant thing to come home to every summer.

When does the swim season start?

November 2nd!

What is your favorite part of being on the swim team?

The swim team is a great environment. It isn’t too intense but you can go and get a good workout while having fun with the team. We always get dinner together after practice, are goofy, and love spending time together.

What is the swim team’s goal for the upcoming season?

We work towards NESCACs every year and try to get girls on podium, either individually or as a relay team.

What is the balance between the individual and team aspects of swimming like?

A lot of swimming is individual. You are always racing against yourself and trying to improve your time. However, there is a definite emphasis on the team as well. Relays are my favorite because I am able to work with my teammates, who push me to swim even faster. At the end of the day, even if my time is slower than usual, I’m happy if I am able to get points for my team.

Do you have any advice for incoming freshmen?

Try new things and get involved! Clubs are a great way to meet people. Also, getting to know upperclassmen is a huge advantage because they know a lot about this campus and life in general.
