The Ultimate Fall Layering Look- Pick & Choose These 5 Pieces

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GWU chapter.

Fall weather in the District is no different from any other season here- it’s unpredictable. I am also as indecisive as the weather: I am constantly finding myself standing in my closet while checking the weather app and struggling to decide on what to wear. I walk to my 8 a.m. in the freezing cold and then I am on the verge of sweating walking across campus in the afternoon.

But, these 5 pieces of clothing can transform your look throughout the day to go from “I am freezing and don’t want to be in my 8 a.m.” to “I took a stroll to Georgetown and treated myself to Baked and Wired.”

Oversized is definitely a trend this fall. From scarves to sweaters to boyfriend jeans, you can take advantage of being comfortable, warm and on trend!

1.     Scarf:

An oversized scarf is both comfortable and useful. A plaid picnic blanket-style scarf or a knitted “infinity” style sweater scarf can warm you up in the morning. Or, wear it with a loose long-sleeve t-shirt to add a pop of color.

2.     Oversized sweater:

Sweaters are a basic for any girl’s fall wardrobe- I mean, have you heard of Sweater Weather!? This fall, upgrade the plain sweater, and wear an oversized boyfriend style sweater so you are able to put a button down or flannel underneath. With a chunky sweater and layering of your favorite scarf and long-sleeve shirt, you won’t even need to drag along a jacket!

3.     Button Down Shirt:

Sticking with the oversized and boyfriend style, a button down shirt in either flannel or denim is the perfect piece of clothing to layer with. Button down shirts are so versatile it is almost a crime if a girl doesn’t one at least one this season. Throw the shirt under your sweater, tie it around your waist while wearing a cute cropped jacket, or wear it unbuttoned with a cute t-shirt and scarf. Button down shirts are easy to bring with you in your bag, or take off if you want to totally change your look mid-day.

4.     Jacket: Jean, Leather, Suede

It is not yet time to break out your winter down jacket! Pair a cute cropped jean, leather or suede (huge fall trend!) jacket over your oversized sweater and scarf and you will be ready for a busy day of studying for midterms and going to class. Or, wear your coziest flannel under a suede or leather jacket, grab a hot coffee and take on the day. They are easy to carry along or tie around your waist so you won’t have to run back to your dorm to drop it off as the day gets hotter.

5.     Booties or Sneakers

The boy-ish trend continues! Sneakers are the hottest trend hitting the pavement this fall. If you don’t want to get caught looking out of place in your knee-high black boots when it is 70 degrees (…this happened to me last week), layer the above pieces of clothing, cuff your jeans, and throw on your freshest pair of sneaks to look like a stylish fashion blogger. Or, wear heeled booties if it is a little too chilly for your ankles to freeze on your way to class in the morning.

To keep your look polished instead of clunky, stick to a maximum of three of the above pieces. Add a cute beanie or fedora to top off your look and you’re ready for a day of classes or a day of brunching and touring the monuments!
