The best claw clips for every hair type

Dearest reader,

I can tell you that if there is one thing you need to know about me, it is that I think claw clips are the most revolutionary fashion trend of the past year. They will not crease your hair like my previously-beloved scrunchies will – they are versatile in the ways they can be styled, and best of all- they are FUNCTIONAL. However, as a girlie with thick, thick hair, I have found that not all claw clips work for me (looking at you, tiny flimsy clips). As a claw-clip connoisseur, I believe that over the past year I have found the best claw clips that work for every hair type, whether your hair is fine, thick, braided, or anywhere in between.

THIN AND FINE HAIR

These metal Willbond clips are perfect for keeping fine hairs in place. The extra teeth and the added strength from the metal will lock your hair in and keep it in place all day. Plus, this 6 pack from Walmart comes with gold, silver, and rose gold clips to match and accessorize with any outfit.

This Free People clip is a little on the pricier side, coming in at $24, but I have to say it’s worth it. It’s stylish and incredibly functional. When consulting with my finer-haired friends, all three of them raved about this claw clip as one of the only clips that can hold their hair up tight all day. Plus, it comes in 14 different colors. Hard to beat that range.

MEDIUM AND THICK HAIR

This claw clip from Target is my saving. freaking. grace. I have it in my hair as I am writing this. I picked it up from a Target in Columbia Heights one day on a whim and I cannot live without it now. My hairstylist Sharon always tells me I have the thickest hair of any client she’s ever had, so thick-haired girls: trust my word on this one. This $5 claw clip will not let my hair budge all day.

My mom bought me this claw clip on a whim one day when she was out shopping and let me tell you- it’s a staple. Running in at around $13, this clip from Altar’d State is a gem for ladies with thicker hair. It’s big enough to wrap around even the thickest of locks and has held back my hair for the entire duration of my walk from the tip of Georgetown to my place in Foggy Bottom. I cannot say better things about this cute clip.

CURLY HAIR

I had to consult my friend with 3B hair for this one, and when I asked her about the best claw clip for curly hair, she pulled three of these PATTERN by Tracee Ellis Ross clips out of her tote bag. Strong enough to hold thick curls for hours, and has curved teeth that work with the curls to keep them in place.

Girls with big hair need a big clip to hold it together. That’s why this cute pink clip from Andi works so well for curly hair- it’s huge. At 5.5 inches long, it will get the job done and looks cute while doing it.

BRAIDED HAIR

One of my favorite TikTok users I follow, @k4lechi, uses these claw clips from Amazon to hold back her braids. Her hair always looks amazing, so I’ll take her word for it. Running at about $10 for a pack of 12 multicolored clips, it’s hard to find a better deal on good quality claw clips. They have an average rating of 5 stars on Amazon with over 9,000 reviews, so run, don’t walk.

This $5 clip from Target is another great option for girls with thick braids. It is big enough to hold all the hair in place, and has extra long teeth to really grip the hair. The clip is super sturdy, and a great every day option.

One of my favorite aspects of claw clips is how versatile they are and they can work for any type of hair. Whether you’re a veteran claw clip wearer from the 1990s, a Gen Z member just starting to try them out, or someone looking for a small gift for their friend, these recommendations are foolproof. I hope they never go out of style, because I know I’ll never stop wearing them.
