The Six Best Films to Watch on Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GWU chapter.

The most romantic day of the year is quickly approaching, and the options to fill it remain endless. Whether you plan on curling up under a blanket with Ben & Jerry’s or intend to spend the evening with someone special, you can never go wrong with timeless romantic movies with some laughs, some tears, and a lot of heart. So, grab some popcorn, tissues, and stream one of these movies that are guaranteed to be well-loved, even if you’re a Valentine’s-Day hater.

“You’ve Got Mail”

A romantic comedy with a tale as relevant as ever. Two enemies in a business attempt to befriend each other, without knowing that they’re communicating with one another on the internet through anonymous email addresses. With Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan as the perfect cast pairing, you can’t go wrong with this movie on a Friday night.

“The Notebook”

Get ready to cry. Based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, The Notebook traces the life of a young southern girl and her attempt to navigate through people, life, and love. If you’re searching for a Valentine’s Day movie, The Notebook is the perfect mix of romance, passion, drama, and an impressing love story—it’s one of those movies that’ll always remain classic.

“Valentine’s Day”

It doesn’t get more straightforward than this movie. The film follows a group of people whose romantic and social lives remain every bit intertwined (along the lines of Love Actually). And the cast of the movie makes it even better: Jennifer Garner, Bradley Cooper, Patrick Dempsey, Ashton Kutcher, and Taylor Swift all make a significant appearance.

“Notting Hill”

There’s nothing more charming than love stories centered in small English towns with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. This story focuses on an American Hollywood actress who falls in love with a travel bookshop owner in Notting Hill. If you want to watch a feel-good movie about identity, hope and standing up for who you love, then this is the movie for you.

“Roman Holiday”

Any movie with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck is guaranteed to be a good film, and Roman Holiday is one of the best Valentine’s day movies to watch. Hepburn stars as a Roman princess trying to escape a premediated, royal life and define her own. Peck plays a charismatic news reporter attempting to succeed in his field. As both their paths cross, they learn to navigate through new opportunities, people, and love.

“Casablanca”

If you love classic, retro, 1950s cinema, then Casablanca is the perfect Valentine’s Day film. Humphrey Bogart plays a witty, handsome nightclub owner and Ingrid Bergmann stars as his ex.  Both people cross paths again after she visits the nightclub to search for legal documents to aid her and her husband’s escape to the US. Plus, it includes one of American film’s best and most famous lines ever: “Of all the gin joints in the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine.”
