Fall has arrived and with it pumpkin spiced lattes, boots, and when I went apple picking in Virginia last weekend, I even saw some foliage. If you’re interested in getting into the fall/Halloween spirit this month, consider checking out these fun, festive events around DC!

Fright Fest at Six Flags America: From September 28-October 27, stop by Six Flags in Mitchellville, Maryland to enjoy scary attractions and shows at the area’s largest Halloween celebration! Go on thrilling rides in the dark, trick-or-treat and brace yourself for a ride on a haunted train! You can even get to Six Flags by the Metro.

Night of the Living Zoo: From 6:30-10 pm on October 30, go to the National Zoo in your Halloween costume to enjoy the zoo at night! Get your palm read, see fire-eaters and illusionists, and enjoy drinks. Must be 21 to attend.

Zombie Run at the National Harbor: On October 26, dress up as a zombie and run a 5K to raise money for an international organization called Smile Train.

Snallygaster DC: From 1-5 pm on October 19, go to Union Market for a beer festival. Over 100 ales and lagers will be featured, along with food vendors, live music, DJs, and recreational activities. It’s an Oktoberfest in DC!

Check out the foliage: Go to Rock Creek Park or Mount Vernon 30 minutes outside of the city to see some beautiful fall foliage. If you’re from New England like I am, you won’t want to miss this!

Go pumpkin picking: There are patches throughout Maryland and Virginia, or you can simply stop by Trader Joe’s and pick up a few pumpkins! Carve them up and bake the seeds for a delicious fall snack.

Spend the day apple picking: I went to Hartland Orchard in Virginia last weekend. Rent a ZipCar and drive half an hour outside the city to enjoy nature, take a break from the city, and pick apples for a lot cheaper than you can buy them at Whole Foods! I got a whole peck of apples for 5 bucks! Hurry up though, because apple picking season is ending.

Hopefully the weather will begin to reflect fall weather soon – but for now, relax, and enjoy some fall festivities to take your mind off of midterms for a few hours! Have a great October, GWU!
