The Perfect Traveling Outfit

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GWU chapter.

With the holidays quickly approaching, it’s time to start thinking about what you’re going to pack away in your suitcase for home and what you’ll actually be wearing on that bus, train, or plane ride. Comfort and versatility are obviously a must for those traveling any distance and the best way to accomplish this is through layers. Though sweatpants and a hoodie sound beyond comfy, these easy tips will have you looking cute with the same coziness!

For optimum winter comfort, start with a great cardigan or sweater. This shawl cardigan from Top Shop is perfect for layering ($50). Pair a cute tank underneath for warmth and layers. Try this loose and soft mohair knitted sweater, also from Top Shop, for $72. Mohair is insanely warm and soft so you’ll be snug when wearing this sweater! If you don’t want a bulky sweater, layer with this lace three quarter sleeve shirt from H&M in white, dark blue, black, or beige ($24.95). The button details on the back are the perfect touch!
Since you’ll probably be sitting for a long amount of time, break out your comfiest leggings and pants. I love this pair of leggings from Threadsence with pleather panels on the sides ($45). Look for little details to spice up the usual leggings and make yourself stand out. You never know what cute guy will help you lug your huge suitcase onto the train. If you’re partial to pants try these boyfriend-fitted Levi cargo pants from Macys ($54). The utility pockets are big enough to hold your bus, train, or plane ticket. Cotton is a great fabric to travel in because it breathes well. Try this pair of cotton cuffed capris for a more pulled together look with a great fabric.
The newest trend in footwear that I’m seeing everywhere and love is the velvet loafer. This chic alternative to a flat can be dressed up or down and can be seen in any color or print. Personally, I know what I’m adding to my Christmas List last minute! With a simple and laid-back outfit, don’t be afraid go bold in footwear. Try out these fun Vectra3 studded slippers from Top Shop in nude or black ($56), or these amazing leopard print pony hair slippers from Asos ($95.45). If prints and studs aren’t your style, Asos also offers solid colored loafers…I’m obsessed with this Bordeaux color ($63.63)! These loafers are perfect for travelling because they’re easy to slip on and off if you’re going through the security line in the airport. They also offer a comfy instead of bulky option for that ride home.
A scarf is the perfect accessory for traveling. You can use it as a blanket, pillow, or shawl. Try this infinity scarf from Urban Outfitters ($34) or this mohair version from American Apparel ($39)…I love the crème color with the thin black stripes! Also, you may think there’s only one way to wear a scarf but there’s actually a ton. Check out http://www.scarves.net/how-to-tie-a-scarf/ for the MANY different options out there for you! The Youtube videos are super helpful and fun.
Though we all love GW and Foggy Bottom, finals week is the worst week of the year. So take a study break and plan out what you’re gonna wear on your way home with some of these tips!
