“Sometimes people mistake dance for being simply a hobby, but when you allow yourself to become immersed in its depth, creativity and passion, it becomes a way of life, “ said Jacqueline Garcia. “Dance is my way of life.”
Garcia, a 19-year old sophomore from New Jersey debuts as this week’s Campus Celebrity. Garcia spent her childhood years taking a full range of dance classes from the time she was three years old and continued them through her teenage years. It was at GW, however, that Garcia achieved her greatest dance endeavor to date: a spot on the university’s nationally acclaimed dance team, the GW First Ladies. Garcia joined the team in August 2010 and was granted a position on the team again this year after it was placed under the new leadership of former Director of the NBA Washington Wizards Dance Team, Wanda Brown.
“Wanda is such an inspiration to the team because of her faith in our skills and her supportive and motivational attitude,” said Garcia of her newest mentor.
Aside from her involvement with the dance team, Garcia also interns for Sen. Robert Menendez (D) and previously danced with Capital Funk, one of GW’s other prestigious dance crews on campus. Garcia is currently campaigning to become the Programming Chair of Guthridge Hall and plans to audition to compete in the Miss D.C. Pageant in the spring.
