The Blair Witch Project (1999)
This movie is a found footage film, directed by Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick. This movie follows the story of three students who visit a small town in order to record footage of the Blair Witch, a local myth. As the movie progresses, the film students get lost and struggle to return back to safety. While filming the movie, the actors were only given an outline of the movie’s plot, so the whole film is a product of improvisation mixed with the authentic fear of the actors. The directors did this so the movie would feel real to viewers. I recommend this movie because it is a classic that serves as inspiration for many popular found-footage films.
Hell House LLC (2015)
This 2015 YouTube found footage film by Stephen Cognetti is my all-time favorite. This movie follows the story of five friends who set out to turn an abandoned house into a small town haunted house attraction. As the movie progresses, strange things start to happen and the friends come closer to their fate. The “mockumentary” style of this film feels very real, which only adds to the experience. If you love plot twists, then you’ll love Hell House.
House of Wax (2005)
Taking a break from found footage films, this movie is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. This is a newer adaptation of the 1953 film. This movie is similar to other horror movies, but it had me drawn to the screen the entire time. This film is about five teens who get stranded on their way to a football game and come across an old, abandoned wax museum. This movie is good at tricking viewers, leading to unexpected outcomes, jumpscares, and plot twists. The cast is also full of many recognizable stars, such as Jared Padalecki, Paris Hilton, and Chad Michael Murray. I recommend this movie if you’re looking for a scary yet laid-back movie night.   Â
Us (2019)
This movie, directed by Jordan Peele (Get Out), is not necessarily “scary” but it is unsettling to say the least. This movie follows the story of a mother who has to face the fears of her past and protect her family in the process. This movie is full of jump scares and major easter eggs. There is so much attention to detail in this movie, and if you love analyzing movies, you will thoroughly enjoy watching it.
