Get Your Side Hustle On From the Comfort of Your Own Dorm

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GWU chapter.

As college students, we’re all looking to make a little extra money whenever possible. Nowadays, especially with social media, there are ways to remotely make some “mula” without having to leave your dorm room or apartment. Now, you might be asking yourself: “Okay this all sounds great, but what is something that I could provide people that they would actually pay for? We all have skills, so wrack your brain and ask yourself what your strengths and interests are. These 7 examples will give you ideas of how to side hustle your way through college!

1. Start a podcast

If you have something that you’re passionate about and want to broadcast your thoughts, think about starting a Podcast. If you’re into this, Anchor.com is a free hosting and distributing platform, which makes it really easy to start. Once you start growing your audience, you can monetize your pod!

2. Sell your old clothes

We all have those clothes in the back of our closets that we haven’t worn in AGES. Download the apps Poshmark or Depop and start selling your old clothes. My rule of thumb is if I haven’t worn a piece of clothing in the past three months, sell it!

3. Create an Etsy shop and sell handmade jewelry

If jewelry making is your thing, then make some money off of it! Etsy.com is a great way to sell handmade items, so jump on that!

4. Provide makeup services

If you’re into makeup and find yourself constantly helping your friends with their makeup looks, think about providing makeup services! You could create an Instagram account showcasing your makeup skills and offer makeup services for special events like formals or proms!

5. Provide graphic design and branding services

If you have graphic design skills or like the idea of helping newer brands/companies with branding, create an Instagram for it. @Esm.Creative’s account on Instagram is a great example of this. I recommend checking her account out for some inspiration.

6. Create a vintage store on Instagram

People love the idea of buying vintage: it’s environmentally friendly AND affordable. Take trips to the thrift store and then resell them to make a profit! Combine your love for fashion and making the world a better place.

7. Sell customized apparel

There are many Instagram accounts and websites that sell customized apparel. If you find yourself altering your own clothes, cropping your shirts, ironing words onto your sweatpants, this might be a good option! @shirtsby_soph is a great example of a college student side hustling her way to success by making customized apparel!

As you can see, there are so many ways to make a little extra money. Find something that you’re passionate about and use your skills to your advantage.
