Insecure, an HBO original show created by Issa Rae, is a comedy series the explores the friendships between two black women and how they navigate their everyday life in South LA. The cast features a black majority and delves into numerous social and racial issues that have to do with being black in America. A 10/10 must watch.

High on the hog: How african american cuisine transformed america

This show is definitely a unique find. A receiver of the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Documentary, the show follows chef and food writer Stephen Satterfield as he follows the origins of African-American delicacies across the continental United States. Every foodie is going to love this.

Atlanta, created by actor and rapper Donald Glover (a.k.a Childish Gambino), tells the story of up and coming rappers looking to make a name for themselves in Atlanta’s popular hip hop industry. With notable names like Donald Glover (obviously), LaKeith Stanfield, Zazie Beetz, and Brian Tyree Henry, this show is sure to appease anyone who watches.

immortal life of henrietta lacks

Director George C. Wolfe released this movie in 2017 adapted from the book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. It tells the true life story of Henrietta Lacks, played by none other than Oprah Winfrey, a black woman who died young of cervical cancer who became famous for her “immortal” cells and their use in medicine. The movie explore themes of ethics and the exploitation of black Americans in the medicinal field. Equal parts entertaining and educational.
