What It’s Like to Work Black Friday

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gustavus chapter.

As a worker in retail, I love Black Friday/Thursday. I come in after eating delicious food, get paid time and a half for a shift that goes by incredibly quickly, there’s always more amazing food in the break room, usually a holiday movie playing, and it’s a major bonding day for employees. What I never expected was the constant criticism I received from customers for simply working. This is an actual conversation I’ve had multiple times, every year:

“Concerned” Customer: “That’s just TERRIBLE they make you come to work on Thanksgiving!” Me: “I actually chose to work today.” “Concerned” Customer: “Why on earth would you do that?” Me: “I get time and a half.” “Concerned” Customer: “So a few extra bucks is worth more than your family?” Me: “I spent all day with them. We ate our food for lunch instead.” “Concerned” Customer: “I still think that’s ridiculous that the store is open on Thanksgiving.” Me: “Well – we wouldn’t be if it weren’t for people like you,” I say as she wheels in her second cart to unload.

Black Friday is the one day I give myself the excuse to not put up with anybody’s sh*t (and every manager I’ve had supports me with that decision). So don’t be surprised when you get attitude back from the tired, overworked cashier. Here are some friendly reminders so you can avoid that awkward situation and making a fool out of yourself:

1. It is not my fault the computers are slow – it is literally the busiest day of the year.

2. It is not my fault the Wi-Fi is down because so many people are attempting to use it right now.

3. It is not my fault you forgot your f****** coupons.

4. It is not my fault the item you wanted is now out of stock.

5. I don’t care how long you’ve been waiting in line – I’ve probably worked (multiple) shifts that were longer.

6. Please take your bags and go – take the conversation with your old high school buddy who you haven’t seen in 10 years into the parking lot. You are now the person you were complaining about 2 minutes ago.

Also, the most important tip for this holiday season especially:

****CHECK YOUR PRIVILEGE BEFORE YOU COMPLAIN****

Happy Holidays! HCXO!
