Five Reasons to Journal

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gustavus chapter.

Recently, journaling has become a trendy way of writing down your thoughts and ideas in a cute and aesthetically pleasing type of way. With all the videos of bullet journaling circling around, it’s really no surprise. But, journaling is more than just a cute way to write down inspiring quotes to post on your instagram. Here are five real reasons to get into journaling.

1. Organize your life

Journaling can be used as a type of planner or agenda. You can write down all your to do lists, assignments that need to be completed, or other notes of things you need to remember. I always find myself putting pen to paper when it comes to making reminders for myself. Most of the time, I remember it a lot better than putting a note in my phone or not writing anything down at all.

2. Venting about your day

I often find myself spewing all my thoughts into my journal after a long day. Sometimes, the things you are thinking need to get out but maybe shouldn’t be said aloud. Writing down your feelings helps you to really come to terms with your emotions, and oftentimes you feel a lot better after writing it all down.

3. Use it as a relaxation technique

As I mentioned before, journaling can be really aesthetically pleasing if you want it to be. Instead of just writing, you can make little artworks throughout the pages of your journal. Grab a bunch of different art supplies and make some cool doodles! Taking some time to focus on something simple, like coloring, can be very relaxing.

4. Create a memory journal

Tape in ticket stubs, pictures, dried flowers, or any other little things that hold memories of certain days. You can write little captions for each piece you put in your journal, so when you flip back through the pages, you have a little reminder of why that moment was so special to you.

5. Keep track of goals

I know people who use journaling as a way to track their exercise routines and eating habits when they are trying to become healthier. While this exact example may not be for everyone, the idea is cool. Write down what you want to accomplish during the school year, or keep track of your spending habits when saving for a trip. You’ll be surprised how much holding yourself accountable can help you achieve some of your goals!
