It’s pretty safe for me to say that joining a Greek organization at my school has been the best decision I have made during my college career so far. While that may sound a little dramatic, there are so many benefits that come along with Greek life that it’s hard not to think of it as an amazing choice to join. Here are five benefits to joining Greek life at your school.

1. The connections you make with other people

Not only have I met some of my best friends through my sorority, but I’ve also made connections with other amazing people in the other Greek orgs on my campus. I have come to know some outstanding alumni who are working all over the world, continuing to make an impact on people’s lives outside of college, something we all hope to do.

2. An easy way to help the community

Certain community service events for my sorority are required for all members, which is a great way to get people to give back to the community if they did not have the time or connections otherwise. We do simple things, like volunteer at the local soup kitchen once a week, and bigger, all Greek things, like help out at the Special Olympics held on campus in the spring. These opportunities are heartwarming and very rewarding- plus, you do get in the community service hours for applications.

3. Building leadership skills

The chair positions and responsibilities I have had to uphold so far in my sorority have pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow as a person. I have had to plan and organize campus wide events, lead and facilitate groups, as well as learn to voice my opinion when it comes to the betterment of our campus and Greek life. These are all life skills that will benefit me in the workplace.

4. High academic achievement

Most Greek organizations on college campuses require each member to have a certain GPA in order to join the org. This helps keep each student accountable for their academics, and provides a support system if they are struggling to do so. My sorority holds study hours several times a semester, where we can get together and do homework while catching up about our lives. It’s super fun!

5. Grow confidence

Being surrounded by a group of strong, independent, hard working women has pushed me to become a better version of myself. I have never felt better about a group of friends, and it really does help to build your self confidence. I know I always have someone there to talk to or give me a little boost when I’m feeling down. Overall, the girls in my sorority are amazing people that I value highly.
