Corbyn Jenkins: Artsy Beyond Compare

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gustavus chapter.

Anytime I mention the name “Corbyn” to a classmate or friend on campus, most of the time their response is, “OMG, Corbyn the writer?!” I guess that’s what happens when your roommate writes for multiple writing platforms, including The Odyssey, with a total amount of views reaching well over 45,000. Corbyn is more than a writer, though; she loves photography, painting, concerts, and coffee. I had the opportunity to sit down with my roomie and ask her a couple questions involving her daily life on campus and what inspires her to become a better artist in all her content areas.

What writing platforms do you write for? What do you feel is the importance of them?

“I write for the Gustavus Odyssey, Her Campus at Gustavus, and the Gustavian Weekly. They are all a way for me to get my voice out to the world because I’m just a girl from a small town!”

Who/what are your inspirations for your art?

“Vincent Van Gogh and Ansel Adams are two of my biggest inspirations. Ansel’s photographs are what made photography an official artform, which I really admire. I like Vincent because he was crazy. He ate yellow paint because he thought it would make him happy, and I just think that’s funny.”

If you were a coffee drink, what would you be and why?

“I want to say that I’d be a strong coffee, like a really dark roast. That way it’d represent that I’m a strong person. But dark coffee is disgusting! So I’d have to say I’m something sweet and yummy, like a vanilla latte–but maybe with a shot of espresso for that extra kick.”

What are your plans for your future at Gustavus?

“Well, as of right now I’m going to be an elementary education teacher with an endorsement in English, unless I change my mind. In that case, I’d major in photojournalism. I’m hoping to study abroad at some point! I applied for the study abroad J-Term, so hopefully I get into that. Fingers crossed!”

Who are your favorite music artists? Have you seen any of them live?

“The 1975, Ed Sheeran, Catfish and the Bottlemen, LANY, and John Mayer are my top favorites. I haven’t seen LANY or John Mayer live, but I’m seeing them together this April with my dad. He doesn’t know what’s coming. The fangirl is about to come out.”

What’s your dream future?

“So, I have two scenarios. Scenario one: I will not be married and I will not have children. I will travel the world, have a cute little artist loft in Seattle, continue writing for platforms, and be a National Geographic photographer. Scenario two: This one is more realistic. I will become a teacher, get married to a hot guy, have three kids (two boys and a girl, named Charlie, Flynn, and the girl name will come to me later). We will live in a cute house, probably still in Minnesota, and if we’re lucky, on a lake. I can’t decide which scenario is better.”

Corbyn is the artist of the month at the Fillin’ Station coffee shop in downtown Mankato! She has around 15 pictures on display of some of her favorite photographs she has taken. The next time you’re looking to get your coffee fix at a cute shop, check out the Fillin’ Station and take a look at her work!
