Tips for Writing Essays in University

Writing essays or research papers in university can be stressful. There is so much information to research and interpret, not to mention convey it clearly and correctly cite where it all came from. These are a few tips and tricks to help make this essay-writing season a little easier.

1.     Start early

I know that everyone says this, but it is so true. Starting early really can help you find the best information and give you enough time to figure out how to convey it all. It can also be a lifesaver if your research doesn’t quite lead to where you thought it would, and you’re faced with the slightly terrifying possibility of having to rework your entire essay. If you start your essay or research paper early, it gives you additional time to head over to Writing Services or the Research Help Centre in the library to seek clarification if you need it.

2. Talk to your Professor

This is also a great idea! I find it really helps to visit your professor during their office hours and seek their feedback on your research, as well as how you intend to structure it and prove your thesis. They will be able to let you know if you’re on the right track, and point you in the direction of other sources that you may not have thought of. It also helps to talk to your professor about your research paper ideas at least a week or two before your assignment is due. This will provide you with ample time to improve your research or plans if they need revision. It will also make you look organized and dedicated too!

3. Give yourself time to edit and revise

Setting aside a few days to a week to edit and revise is particularly important if you are submitting a paper that is 2, 000 words or longer. Typos or awkward phrasing will make it difficult for your professor to understand what thoughts you are trying to convey. They may also make your paper seem like it was completed in a hurry. Finally, it is always a good idea to check and double check your in-text citations or footnotes, as well as your bibliography to ensure that everything is cited correctly.

Good luck!
