GSU Reigns Supreme: Sunbelt Conference Proves Why You Should Choose #StateNotSouthern

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GSU chapter.

Georgia State Beats Georgia Southern at Sunbelt Conference Today

The Panthers beat the Eagles 34-7. There is no more to say.  Georgia Southern had so much to say on social media prior to their team losing. Fly away Eagles, fly away. This week was all about the age old rivalry between Georgia State University and Georgia Southern University. Today, “The Real GSU” football team outplayed Georgia Southern, 34-7 at the Sunbelt conference. Fans of both teams are showcasing their school spirit, and hate for the rival school using Twitter as the main host. StateNotSouthern is a twitter page dedicated to  Georgia State and it’s disapproval for Georgia Southern. Hashtags  #TheRealGSU, #StateNotSouthern,  #GoPanthers appear relentlessly on this page exhibiting why Georgia State is better than Southern. Vice Versa, #SouthernNotState is a page dedicated to to the polar school and it’s disapproval for Georgia State. Regardless of the rivalry between the two Georgia colleges, Georgia State University, aka “TheRealGSU” is simply better than Georgia Southern, and here are five reasons why.

Georgia State University is officially “The Real GSU”

Georgia Southern is in denial about who “TheRealGSU” is.  Clearly, when anyone types in “GSU” on google, information related to Georgia State University shows up first. Not to mention, a huge profile of Georgia State University shows up on the right side of the google page. Besides google, whenever the GSU acronym is being used in terms of colleges outside of Georgia Southern University’s twitter page, it is always being related to Georgia State University and no college else.

Georgia State’s Location Vs. Georgia Southern’s Location

Georgia State is located in Atlanta; the beautiful and well-known capital city of Georgia. Georgia Southern is located in the city of… well…Statesboro. When one thinks of the city of Atlanta, thoughts like  new opportunities, music, famous actors and creativity come to mind. When one thinks of Statesboro, thoughts like Georgia Southern, Georgia Southern and Georgia Southern comes to mind, because besides the college, what is great about the location? Please give me some ideas if you have any.

Georgia Southern is in  a Dry County

Georgia Southern students have to drive a far distance to attain liquor. This school has the reputation of being a party school so one would not expect the closest liquor store to be about 18 miles away. If you decide to visit a friend and party at Georgia Southern, you have three options:bring your own liquor, be prepared to spend money on over priced drinks at a bar, or bring extra money for gas because driving to the liquor store is another road trip. Don’t believe this is true. Read Shakeem Holloway’s article, Dry Country Blues, The thirst is real in Statesboro. Holloway is a student at Georgia Southern that wrote this article complaining about the  lack of liquor stores in Statesboro. With Georgia State being in the city of Atlanta, we do not have this issue.

Networking opportunities at Georgia State vs. Georgia Southern

An important part of college is networking. Of Course, Georgia State and Georgia Southern’s students connect with their fellow peers as expected. But with Georgia State being in the city, we have more opportunities to network with people that are established and where we would like to see ourselves in the future. Actors, musicians and investment bankers cross the same streets Georgia State students cross. CNN, Invest Atlanta, The Atlanta Braves corporate building, and The Board of Regents University System of Georgia are all establishments either nearby or surrounding Georgia State University. Networking opportunities mainly present themselves when one of these outstanding people are invited to speak at our school.

The excitement is real at Georgia State

Imagine walking to class and witnessing a film production in progress? This happens often at Georgia State. We find it pretty cool to be in such an awesome city that shoots really big films.
