Grinnell Life

Sports/Activities:

Football has been a main time commitment in my four years here at Grinnell. Outside of that, I spend a lot of my time cheering on other sports teams. I’m also involved in Legacy, a Bible study group on campus.

Best class you’ve taken:

I’ve really enjoyed taking American Studies classes with Kesho Scott as a professor. Her personality was a real slap in the face when I first came to Grinnell, but the content and lectures kept me coming back for more! I ended up taking three separate American Studies classes under her and created some fun projects.

Favorite theme party:

This one’s a no-brainer for me: it’s got to be Frank. Frank is one of the best times to get all spiffy and make some memories with good friends, and I’m man enough to admit that I have a soft spot for the fuzzy navels served at Frank. I will say that there is a little boogie in these pants, and you can’t go wrong with Disco, either.

Embarrassing first-year moment:

As a shy, small first-year, I didn’t go out and socialize very often, so most of my friends were from classes/football — but apparently I didn’t make a very big impact. I totally forgot about the end-of-the-year football banquet and just sat in my room oblivious to the fact. That wasn’t the worst part of it all: not only did I miss the event, nobody realized I wasn’t there. None of the captains or coaches ever called me out on it. Needless to say, I never missed another meeting and tried to make it a point to stand out a little more.

Love Life

Taken or single?

Single

Any deal-breakers?

I’d find it really tough to date a girl that smokes cigarettes. That cancer’s a serious business and shouldn’t be messed with. Plus, the taste and general smell is too much for me to handle.

Perfect date?

I think the perfect date relies more on the girl than the setting, so there are a lot of ways this could go. With that said, I’d really enjoy a low-key date where the pressure’s off. Something simple, like going out to eat and heading back to watch a movie and relaxing. Maybe that’s too simplistic, but I haven’t put a ton of thought into my ideal date.

What are you attracted to in a person?

Intelligence is an important characteristic. I’m not saying I want to marry a rocket scientist; just someone smart enough to carry on a witty conversation. A good sense of humor always helps, too; fun company is uplifting.

Miscellaneous

Fun Fact:

I am currently in possession of the wig/personality known as “Marty.” This wig is passed down to a senior every year, and that senior is in charge of keeping attendance high at the various sporting events held at Grinnell as well as being the ultimate sports super fan.

Advice for a first-year:

Stop watching so much freaking Netflix! Your favorite movie/show will still be there after your time at Grinnell; get out and enjoy time with your friends while you have the chance. Also, meet people from all over the country/world. Who knows, you may get lucky enough to befriend a Hawaiian and subsequently get to spend a week there.

What’s next after Grinnell:

I’m getting out of academia, so no grad school for me, but I unfortunately don’t have set plans yet. I’m currently looking into what other Grinnell econ alums have gone on to, with the hope that I’ll find a job I’m passionate about.
