Bob’s Underground Cafe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Grinnell chapter.

On our postering journey, we wandered into Bob’s Underground Cafe and encountered Julia Thompson ’15: fourth year, barista, and artistic mastermind. We were entranced by the tranquil atmosphere and vibrant floor-to-ceiling artwork, which includes a rainbow-rooted tree that Thompson painted.

When we asked what makes Bob’s so special, she explained: “Bob’s has the unique distinction of being an entirely student-run space. From the music to the art to the events we host, Bob’s is by and for its students. That personal connection to Bob’s and the shared responsibility to keep it alive brings students together who might not have met or connected otherwise.” Thompson’s investment in the underground community is also reflected her studies: she is currently conducting an ethnographic study of Bob’s for an anthropology project.

Check out Bob’s for the art, music and nomz (Pizza bagels, paninis, popcorn, OH MY!). Good vibes only!

Katy is the Her Campus Correspondent for Grinnell College. She is a junior psychology major and plans to go to graduate school for clinical psychology. In her spare time, she enjoys photography, skiing, shopping, expanding her music collection, traveling and of course, coming home to her dogs (and the rest of her family).
Dana Sherry is a Her Campus Contributing writer from Brooklyn, New York. She is a History major and a record-holding member of Grinnell's conference-winning swim team. Do not be fooled by the Lilly and bows: in her spare time, Dana is a dirty rap enthusiast and analyst. She also enjoys house music, interacting with small children and has an extensive collection of Essie and OPI nail polish that she (usually) does not mind sharing with her grateful friends.
