Missing Your Squad from Back Home? Here’s How I Keep In Touch

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gonzaga chapter.

Going to college hundreds (or even thousands) of miles away from your best friends can be really hard. Especially when you have known each other since elementary school and some for even longer than that. But I am here to tell you that if your squad really wants to stick together, you guys can make it work – regardless of how many miles or states are standing in your way! Here are some of the ways I keep in touch with my besties from home.

1. Group chats

During our senior year of high school, my four closest friends and I created a group chat on Facebook Messenger. It originally started because NONE of them have iPhones so this was just easier. Now in our second year of college, our group chat is still going strong. From sending each other cute cat videos, ranting about the struggles of being a collegeitte, to gossiping about cute boys, this is the perfect way for us to keep in touch while we are all away at different colleges.

2. Skype dates!

If you can’t see their face in person, you have to go with the next best option! I personally love quality Skype dates with my friends and have had plenty of them while in college so far.

3. Send a card or package

It is a proven fact that all college students LOVE receiving mail. So why not show your besties that you’ve been thinking about them? Sending a cute card or care package with their favorite goodies and a hand-written note is the perfect gesture to show how much you really care! Plus, receiving a card or package in the mail is ten times better than just receiving a text message.

4. Tag each other in funny Facebook and Instagram posts

Whether its a funny yet relatable meme on social media, or an adorable puppy, cat or baby video, I almost always tag my friends in posts like this. Not only will they probably get a laugh out of it, but it also lets them know you’re thinking about them.

5. Make plans in advance to hangout over break

Make plans ahead of time to do something with your friends over winter break or depending how close you are geographically, even a long weekend! This way you will have something to look forward to! I know I always look forward to the annual Christmas party and secret Santa gift exchange that my friends do and I do before Christmas.

Regardless of physical distance, no matter how many miles or states away you are from your squad back home, I guarantee you can make it work if you all put in the effort. I hope these tips and tricks help you stay connected with your friends from home while you are away at college.
