Girl Power was Strong in the Winter Olympics

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gonzaga chapter.

Women are amazing. We see this everyday with all that we do. The Olympics were an opportunity for females to be strong and impressive in an astounding way. If you have been following along with the Olympics, the names Jamie Anderson, Mikaela Shiffrin, and Lindsey Vonn probably sound familiar.

Jamie Anderson

A two time Olympian, this is Anderson’s second time competing for Team USA. She is a snowboarder and competes in the Slopestyle. She is from South Lake Tahoe, California. Her medal count is currently at three with one silver and two golds. This year, Anderson won gold for the Slopestyle competition and also won silver for Big Air.  With Anderson only being 27 years old, it’s likely she will try to compete again at the 2022 Olympics.

Mikaela Shiffrin

Also a two-time Olympian, Shiffrin is an alpine skier and currently has three medals, one silver and two golds. This year, she took silver in the alpine combined and took gold in the giant slalom. She is 23 years old and is from Eagle-Vail, Colorado. This year, she beat Lindsey Vonn in the alpine skiing event and is looked at as the “face of the USA Ski Team”. There is a bright future for Shiffrin as her career continues to flourish!

Lindsey Vonn

The veteran of the bunch, this is Vonn’s fourth Olympics. She holds a total of three medals, two bronze and one gold. She won her gold medal in downhill skiing in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. She was the first American woman to win the gold medal for that event. This year she won a bronze medal in downhill skiing. About five years ago, Vonn took a major fall causing her to have serious injuries. Winning that bronze medal this year was a big deal for her, showing her recovery and ability to overcome her major injuries. With Vonn being 34 years old, it is unlikely she will compete in the 2022 Winter Olympics.

These are just three incredible women who represented USA well this year in PyeongChang. Go Team USA!
