Beating the Post-Holiday Winter Blues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Gonzaga chapter.

Ah yes, we have yet again reached the pivotal point in the winter cycle where all of the holidays have ended, the snow is turning to slush, and the grey skies are getting grey-er.  It doesn’t help that Spring Semester has just started and school is once again in full swing.  Well, just because the number at the end of the date in the upper corner of your notes has changed doesn’t mean your holiday high needs to as well.

There are many advantages to this dry spell between New Years and the next major holiday you just have to know where to find them.  For one, your friends are back! While seeing your family may have been fun, we all know you missed the people who surround you here on campus.  So keep that in mind next time the lack of natural vitamin D starts to get you down.

Also, never fear, FLEX AT STARBUCKS IS HERE!  You know you missed it. All that money you’ve been putting into your peppermint mochas all winter long has been adding up. Be glad you can give your wallet a break and let the Flex do the work now. Really, this is livin’ the dream.

In case you haven’t noticed, you’re back in the 509! And while the weather may be cold and the flurries of snow may be lacking, why don’t you try to nip those winter blues in the bud with the beautiful city around you? Here are seven gems in this little big town you may have not  even known existed!

1.  Rockwood Bakery

Travel Method: You’ll probably want a car. It’s up on the South Hill.

Cost: Think Starbucks pricing.

What makes it a gem: If you like coffee shop vibes and really good chocolate croissants, check out this small restaurant hidden across from a park on the middle of a residential street.

2.  The Qualchan Trails

Travel Method: Also a car, also on South Hill.

Cost:  FREEEEEE

What makes it a gem: Perfect for  hikers and  trail runners! There are miles upon miles of trails and sights to be seen. It overlooks a gorgeous golf course as well. (WINTER DISCLAIMER: It may be slick, so be careful!)

3.  Wolfie’s Restaurant

Travel Method: Walk! It’s just off Sharp and Hamilton. You’ve probably noticed it before!

Cost: $4-6 per burger.

What makes it a gem: If you want a good burger or a killer deep-fried French toast, go here. ‘Nuff said.

4.  Donut Parade

Travel Method: Walk, bike, drive, take a bus, whatever works for you! (Also just up Hamilton)

Cost: Most donuts are under $1. The Maple Bars are closer to $1.50 (Worth it).

What makes it a gem: Where else are you going to find a Maple Bar with bacon and chocolate on it?

5. The Perry District

Travel Method: Car or bus.

Cost: Depends on what you’re looking for.

What makes it a gem: The Perry District has everything from a Farmer’s Market to the greatest pizza place in town; there’s even a dog groomer! Random, right? It’s well-rounded and adorable! Check it out.

6. The Ultimate Bagel

Travel Method: Walk; it’s in the same lot as Wolfie’s.

Cost: A few dollars.

What makesit a gem: While everyone is raving over Einstein’s, the real Bros of Bagel-Making are the people who make cinnamon bagels over on Hamilton next to Starbucks. They, too, have multiple cream cheese choices. And they’re generous with it.

7. GONZAGA UNIVERSITY

Travel Method: You’re already here!

Cost: We know it all too well.

What makes it a gem: The community of Zags and the wonderful campus we get to call home!

So there you have it, folks. There is no excuse to be left in your room wishing it could just be summer already. Find some friends, find a Starbs, and find some adventure! Keep smilin’, Zags, and the sun will be back before you know it!
